Untinted mineral sunscreen has a reputation problem, mostly earned. The formulas are thick, they drag, they pill under everything, and they leave a film. This is the one that solved the texture half of that, and it is why it heads our mineral roundup.
The filters
Titanium dioxide 6% and zinc oxide 5% - mineral only, no chemical filter, at SPF 50. That is a titanium-led formula, which is the reason the texture works: titanium dioxide has a finer particle size than zinc in most formulations and casts slightly less.
The trade is UVA I coverage. Zinc oxide protects across UVB, UVA II and UVA I fairly evenly; titanium dioxide is strongest at UVB and UVA II and weaker at the long end of UVA. A titanium-led formula is therefore a slightly less broad shield than a zinc-led one, and at SPF 50 with 5% zinc alongside, that difference is small rather than absent. The texture, which is the actual reason to buy it
It is a fluid rather than a cream. It spreads rather than drags, it does not pill under a moisturizer that has been allowed to absorb, and it sets to a matte finish. On the specific failure mode of mineral sunscreen rolling off in gray pills, this is the fix.
The matte finish is the counterpart. On dry skin it will look and feel dry unless there is moisturizer under it, so the Toleriane Double Repair pairing is not an accident of the same brand - a light lotion under this works well.
The cast, honestly
It casts. Less than a high-zinc formula, and it settles within a few minutes, and it is still visible on medium and deep skin tones. No untinted mineral formula escapes this - the cast is the filter doing its job, and any product claiming otherwise is describing a particular skin tone.
