Cleansers & Face Wash
Best body wash for sensitive skin
Two of the most recommended fragrance-free body washes declare a perfuming ingredient. Here is what is left.
By Michael W. · Last updated
The short answer
Vanicream Gentle Body Wash is the pick: fifteen ingredients, no fragrance, no essential oils, and the same gentle surfactants as its facial cleanser. For dry limbs, CeraVe Hydrating Body Wash adds ceramides and petrolatum. Two heavily recommended rivals declare a perfuming ingredient despite fragrance-free names.

Most pages about rosacea stop at the jawline. That is a strange place to stop, because the shower is the one part of the day where a fragranced product is applied to a large area of skin, in heat and steam, with the runoff passing over your face on the way down.
This page screens body washes, body cleansers and sensitive-skin bars exactly the way the rest of the site screens face products: against the published ingredient list, fragrance and essential oils first, before anything else is considered. Two of the most recommended fragrance-free body washes in the category do not survive that step, and the reason is on their own labels.
Why the shower is part of a rosacea routine
- Surface area. A body wash touches twenty times the skin a facial cleanser does. If an ingredient sensitizes you, this is the product most likely to do it.
- Heat. Hot water is a recognized rosacea trigger in its own right, and a hot shower is also when fragrance volatilizes most. The two effects stack.
- Runoff. Shampoo and body wash rinse down over the forehead, temples and jaw. People who cannot work out what is irritating a hairline or a jawline are frequently looking at the wrong product.
- Barrier carryover. Stripped body skin and stripped facial skin respond to the same things. A wash that leaves arms tight is telling you something about its surfactant load.
The criteria, before any product
Every pick below had to clear the site screen, then three extra tests specific to this category. Stating them first is the point - a shortlist is only as good as the filter that produced it.
- 1A published, readable ingredient list. No INCI list, no entry. This removed several boutique brands that publish marketing copy instead.
- 2No fragrance and no essential oils, verified on that list - not inferred from a fragrance-free claim on the front. This is where two best-sellers failed.
- 3Surfactant load that suits reactive skin. Glucosides, isethionates, sarcosinates and glycinates ahead of sulfates. One pick here does use a sulfate, and it says so on its card.
- 4Something left behind. Glycerin at minimum, ideally an occlusive. A wash that only removes is a wash you will need to repair afterwards.
- 5Sold in the US right now, in a size worth buying for a whole body.
The screen
Every product on this page had to clear all of the following before it was considered on its merits. This is the exclusion step, and it runs before any recommendation.
- No added fragrance or parfum anywhere in the ingredient list.
- No essential oils, including ones declared under a botanical name.
- No denatured alcohol, witch hazel, menthol, camphor or peppermint.
- No physical scrub particles.
- Sold in the US right now, from a brand that publishes its full ingredient list.
- Every remaining flagged ingredient is named on the product card rather than quietly left out.
Ingredient lists last checked 2026-09-29. Formulas change - if you spot a discrepancy, the published list on the brand's own site wins and we want to know.

The picks, in order
1. Keeping the shower from undoing the face routine
Vanicream Gentle Body Wash

Illustrative photo - not the product.
Fifteen ingredients, no fragrance, the same gentle surfactants as the facial cleanser. Body wash steam and runoff reach your face every day, which is why it belongs in a rosacea routine at all.
What is in it
- Glycerin
- Coco-Glucoside
- Sodium Cocoyl Glycinate
- Panthenol
Best for
Keeping the shower from undoing the face routine
Strengths
- No fragrance, essential oils or botanical extracts
- Panthenol and glycerin so it does not strip
- Same surfactant system as the Vanicream facial cleanser
- Large bottle, low cost per ounce
Trade-offs
- Barely lathers, which people read as not working
- No occlusive - dry skin still needs a body moisturizer after
Who should skip it: Nobody, really - but if your body skin is fine and your budget is tight, the face products matter more.

2. Dry body skin that needs lipids, not just a wash
CeraVe Hydrating Body Wash

Illustrative photo - not the product.
The only wash here carrying three ceramides alongside petrolatum and urea. It leaves a deliberate film rather than rinsing squeaky, which on dry arms and shins is the formula working as designed.
What is in it
- Ceramide 3, 6-II and 1
- White petrolatum
- Glycerin and urea
- Hyaluronic acid
Best for
Dry body skin that needs lipids, not just a wash
Strengths
- Three ceramides plus cholesterol and phytosphingosine
- White petrolatum and urea - the only occlusive-plus-humectant pairing on this page
- No fragrance, masking fragrance or essential oils on the published list
- Sold in every drugstore, in large bottles
Trade-offs
- The petrolatum leaves a slick residue some people actively dislike
- Soybean oil sits high on the list, which matters if you avoid soy derivatives
- Cocamidopropyl betaine is second on the list - an occasional contact allergen in its own right
Who should skip it: Anyone who wants to feel completely rinsed afterwards. The residue is intentional and it does not go away.
Ingredient list read at INCIDecoder - CeraVe Hydrating Body Wash.
3. Very dry, eczema-prone body skin
La Roche-Posay Lipikar AP+ Gentle Moisturizing Body Wash

Illustrative photo - not the product.
Twenty ingredients, no fragrance and no essential oils, with shea butter and glycerin carrying the comfort. One thing to know before you buy: it contains niacinamide, which helps most people and flushes a minority.
What is in it
- Glycerin
- Shea butter
- Niacinamide
- Vitreoscilla ferment
Best for
Very dry, eczema-prone body skin
Strengths
- No fragrance, masking fragrance or essential oils on the published list
- Shea butter and glycerin, so it cleans without stripping
- The brand states it is accepted by the National Eczema Association
- Foams properly, which makes it easy to use on a whole body
Trade-offs
- Sodium laureth sulfate is third on the list - the harshest surfactant in this lineup
- Contains niacinamide, a genuine flushing trigger for a minority of people with rosacea
- Costs noticeably more per ounce than the drugstore picks
Who should skip it: Anyone who has flushed from niacinamide before. Your own history beats any general recommendation, and there are four niacinamide-free options on this page.
Ingredient list read at INCIDecoder - La Roche-Posay Lipikar Wash AP+.
4. Itchy, atopic-prone skin that cannot take a foaming wash
Avene XeraCalm A.D Lipid-Replenishing Cleansing Oil

Illustrative photo - not the product.
A soap-free cleansing oil built for atopic skin: no fragrance, no essential oils, and glucoside surfactants rather than sulfates. It is also, by a wide margin, the most expensive option on this page.
What is in it
- Avene thermal spring water
- Glycerin
- Evening primrose oil esters
- Jojoba seed oil
Best for
Itchy, atopic-prone skin that cannot take a foaming wash
Strengths
- No fragrance or essential oils, and no sulfate surfactants at all
- Decyl glucoside and coco-glucoside - the gentlest cleansing system here
- Jojoba seed oil and evening primrose esters replace some of what washing removes
- Can be added to a bath as well as used in the shower
Trade-offs
- The priciest product on this page by a long way
- Barely foams and feels oily in the shower, which takes getting used to
- Contains Aquaphilus dolomiae extract, a proprietary ingredient whose evidence is brand-funded
Who should skip it: Anyone on a budget. The cheaper picks here clear exactly the same screen, and nothing about the price buys you a stricter ingredient list.
Ingredient list read at INCIDecoder - Avene XeraCalm A.D Lipid-Replenishing Cleansing Oil.
5. Elimination mode - the shortest list on this page
Vanicream Liquid Cleanser (formerly Free & Clear)

Illustrative photo - not the product.
Eleven ingredients. No fragrance, no masking fragrance, no lanolin, no dye and no sulfates. When you are trying to work out what your skin is reacting to, nothing sold for face or body removes more variables at once.
What is in it
- Glycerin
- Sodium lauroamphoacetate
- Sodium lauroyl sarcosinate
- Potassium sorbate
Best for
Elimination mode - the shortest list on this page
Strengths
- Eleven ingredients total - the shortest list in this roundup
- Free of fragrance, masking fragrance, lanolin, dyes and sulfates
- Works on face and body, so it replaces two products during an elimination period
- Sold in a large refill size
Trade-offs
- A thin liquid rather than a shower gel - a whole body gets through a lot of it
- No emollients at all, so dry skin needs a body moisturizer immediately after
- Harder to find on a supermarket shelf than the drugstore picks
Who should skip it: If your skin is calm and you simply want something pleasant to shower with, this is more austerity than the situation calls for.

6. People who want a bar rather than a bottle
Vanicream Cleansing Bar

Illustrative photo - not the product.
A synthetic-detergent bar, not a soap bar - sodium cocoyl isethionate and sodium lauroyl sarcosinate instead of a saponified fat - so it cleans at a far gentler pH than true soap. Fragrance-free and essential-oil-free on the published list.
What is in it
- Sodium cocoyl isethionate
- Sodium lauroyl sarcosinate
- Petrolatum
- Sorbitol
Best for
People who want a bar rather than a bottle
Strengths
- A syndet bar, so none of the alkalinity of a traditional soap bar
- No fragrance, masking fragrance or essential oils on the published list
- Petrolatum and sorbitol built in, so it does not leave skin tight
- The cheapest option here per wash, with no plastic bottle
Trade-offs
- A wet bar in a shared dish picks up whatever else gets used in that shower
- Contains cetearyl alcohol and PEG-30 stearate, which a few very reactive people avoid
- Slower to use over a whole body than a pumped liquid
Who should skip it: Anyone sharing a soap dish with a scented bar - the screen stops meaning anything at that point.

What we screened out, and why
These are products you will find recommended elsewhere for this exact search. Each one is excluded here for a specific, checkable reason - not because it is a bad product, but because it does not clear the screen above.
Cetaphil Ultra Gentle Body Wash Fragrance Free
Its published list ends with heliotropine, which INCIDecoder classifies as a perfuming ingredient. The product is not badly made and it is cheap - but a bottle that says fragrance free on the front and declares a perfuming agent on the back does not clear a fragrance screen.
Aveeno Skin Relief Fragrance-Free Body Wash
The published list carries coriander fruit oil, cardamom seed oil and myrrh oil. Two of those three are classified as perfuming. The oat complex is real and genuinely soothing; the aromatic plant oils are real too, and they are the reason this is not a pick.
Anything scented, lightly scented or unscented
Scented is self-explanatory. Unscented is the one to distrust - a masking fragrance is frequently what makes a product smell of nothing, so unscented can mean more fragrance in the bottle rather than less. There is a full explanation at fragrance-free vs unscented.
Cooling and tingling shower gels
Menthol, camphor and peppermint oil are the ingredients that produce that effect, and all three are neurosensory irritants for rosacea-prone skin. A product that announces itself on your skin in the shower is a poor bet for skin that already overreacts.
Exfoliating and scrub body washes
Physical scrub particles do nothing a washcloth cannot, and they do it less evenly. On reactive skin the cost is a disrupted barrier for the next several days.
True soap bars
A saponified fat - sodium palmate, sodium tallowate, sodium cocoate - cleans at an alkaline pH and takes longer to recover from than a synthetic-detergent bar. Several fragrance-free soap bars would otherwise pass this screen; they are left out on pH, and that is a judgment call we are stating rather than hiding.
The full list of what we flag, what each ingredient is and where the evidence is genuinely mixed lives on ingredients to avoid with rosacea.
Why one manufacturer takes three of six places
Three of the six picks are made by the same company. That is worth saying out loud rather than leaving for a reader to notice, because it looks like favoritism and it is not - there is no relationship of any kind between this site and any brand on it, and the only money here comes from Amazon commission on whatever you choose to buy.
What it actually reflects is how thin this category is once you apply the screen. Body care is the aisle where fragrance is least often removed, because scent is most of what sells a shower product. The brands that strip it out tend to be the ones built for dermatology referrals rather than for shelf appeal, and in the US that is a short list. When a screen is honest, it sometimes produces a lopsided result, and the right response is to report the lopsidedness rather than pad the list with a fragranced product to look balanced.
Bars, soap and the pH question
Sensitive skin soap is searched nearly as often as sensitive skin body wash, and the word soap is doing something specific. True soap is a fat saponified with an alkali, and it cleans at a pH well above skin's own - which is why it squeaks and why skin takes hours to settle afterwards.
| True soap bar | Syndet bar | Liquid body wash | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What cleans | Saponified fat - sodium palmate, tallowate, cocoate | Synthetic detergents - isethionates, sarcosinates | Usually glucosides, betaines or sulfates |
| Typical pH | Alkaline | Close to skin's own | Close to skin's own |
| After-feel | Squeaky, tight | Clean without tightness | Varies with the formula |
| On reactive skin | The option we screen out | A reasonable choice | The easiest to find fragrance-free |
The useful consequence: if you prefer a bar, you do not have to give that up. You need a syndet bar rather than a soap bar, which is why the Vanicream Cleansing Bar is on this page and why popular fragrance-free beauty bars are not. Dove's Sensitive Skin Beauty Bar is the clearest example - it is genuinely fragrance-free on its published list, and it also declares sodium tallowate, sodium palmitate, sodium cocoate and sodium palm kernelate, which are saponified fats. It is a hybrid: part synthetic detergent, part soap. That is the whole reason it is not a pick here, and it is a close call rather than a condemnation.
One product that clears the fragrance screen and still gets a caveat
Eucerin Skin Calming Body Wash is fragrance-free and essential-oil-free on its published list, so it passes the screen as written. It also contains lanolin alcohol, one of the more common contact allergens in skincare, and the formula is largely soybean and castor oil rather than a conventional surfactant system. Neither fact disqualifies it, and plenty of people do well on it. It is mentioned here because a screen that only looks for fragrance will wave through things you may personally need to avoid - which is the argument for reading the list yourself rather than trusting any single filter, including ours. The method behind our list, and its limits, is at how we choose.
How to change your shower without triggering a flare
- 1Change one product at a time, starting with the body wash. Shampoo second, two weeks later.
- 2Turn the water down before you spend anything. Hot water is a trigger on its own, and it is free to fix.
- 3Keep showers short and skip the washcloth on any area that is already red.
- 4Wash your face at the sink, not in the shower. It takes thirty seconds and keeps hot water and body wash runoff off the part of you that minds most. There is more detail in how to cleanse rosacea-prone skin.
- 5Moisturize the body within three minutes of getting out, while skin is still damp. Every pick here removes less than a scented gel would, but none of them replace a moisturizer.
- 6Give it a fortnight. Body skin turns over slowly and two weeks is the minimum honest trial.
What this page cannot tell you
Nothing on this page was lab-tested, and no star ratings or review counts appear anywhere on this site because none exist for it. What we did was read published ingredient lists and report what is in them, which is a narrow claim and a checkable one - every card links to the list we read.
A fragrance-free wash also will not treat rosacea. It removes the most likely avoidable irritant from the largest surface you clean each day. If the redness itself is the problem, the active that has the strongest over-the-counter evidence behind it is covered in best azelaic acid products for rosacea, and the full flagged-ingredient list with a confidence level on every entry is at ingredients to avoid with rosacea.
How we chose
We read the published INCI list for every candidate before looking at anything else, and excluded any product carrying fragrance, a masking fragrance, an essential oil or a perfuming botanical - regardless of what the front of the bottle claimed. Remaining products were ranked on surfactant gentleness, what they leave behind, and whether the size and price make sense for a whole body. Nothing here was tested in a lab, no price is printed, and every pick names who should skip it. Full method at how we choose.
Questions people ask
What is the best body wash for sensitive skin?
Vanicream Gentle Body Wash. Fifteen ingredients, no fragrance, no essential oils and no botanical extracts, with coco-glucoside and sodium cocoyl glycinate doing the cleaning. If your body skin is dry rather than just reactive, CeraVe Hydrating Body Wash adds three ceramides and petrolatum.
Is Cetaphil Ultra Gentle Body Wash fragrance free?
It is sold under that name, and its published ingredient list ends with heliotropine, which INCIDecoder classifies as a perfuming ingredient. If you are screening strictly on fragrance, that is a fail. It is not a bad product and it is inexpensive - it just does not clear this page's screen.
Is Aveeno Skin Relief body wash really fragrance-free?
The published list carries coriander fruit oil, cardamom seed oil and myrrh oil. Two of the three are classified as perfuming. The oat complex in it is genuinely soothing, but the aromatic plant oils are there, and an essential oil declared under a botanical name does not conflict with a fragrance-free claim.
Is bar soap or body wash better for sensitive skin?
It depends on what the bar is made of rather than on bar versus bottle. A true soap bar - saponified palm, tallow or coconut - cleans at an alkaline pH and is the option we screen out. A synthetic-detergent bar like the Vanicream Cleansing Bar cleans close to skin's own pH and is a reasonable choice.
Can body wash cause a rosacea flare on my face?
It can contribute. Body wash and shampoo rinse down over the forehead, temples and jaw in hot water, which is why a hairline or jawline that will not settle is often a shower problem rather than a face-routine problem. Washing your face at the sink instead of in the shower removes that variable.
Do I need a fragrance-free shampoo too?
If your hairline, temples or jaw are the reddest parts of your face, yes - that is the pattern runoff makes. Change the body wash first so you can tell which one mattered, then the shampoo two weeks later.
Is sodium laureth sulfate a problem in a body wash?
It is the harshest surfactant in this lineup and it is more stripping than a glucoside, but it is not an allergen in the way fragrance is. One pick on this page contains it and says so. If your skin is currently calm, it is usually fine; if it is reacting, start with the sulfate-free options.
