Mineral SPF & Sun Protection
Best mineral sunscreens for sensitive skin
Two filters, no fragrance, and the only real argument left is the white cast.

The short answer
EltaMD UV Physical SPF 41 is the best mineral sunscreen for sensitive skin: mineral filters only, no fragrance, no niacinamide, and an iron oxide tint that cancels the cast. La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral SPF 50 is the pick if you want the highest SPF in a fluid that spreads easily, and Vanicream Facial Moisturizer SPF 30 is the one for a short routine - zinc oxide at 19.5% with five ceramides in the base.

If your skin is reactive, mineral sunscreen is the right default, and the reason is mechanical rather than ideological. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are the only two filters the FDA currently proposes as generally recognised as safe and effective, and they work by sitting on the skin surface and scattering ultraviolet light. Chemical filters absorb into the upper skin layers and convert UV to heat, which gives more people a stinging response on an already-inflamed face.
That is the whole case. It is not that chemical filters are dangerous - the evidence does not support that - it is that on sensitive skin the filter that stays on top of your skin causes fewer problems than the one that goes into it. Five products here are fragrance-free, mineral-led and worth buying; the argument between them is about SPF, texture and how much white cast you will tolerate.
The screen
Every product on this page had to clear all of the following before it was considered on its merits. This is the exclusion step, and it runs before any recommendation.
- No added fragrance or parfum anywhere in the ingredient list.
- No essential oils, including ones declared under a botanical name.
- No denatured alcohol, witch hazel, menthol, camphor or peppermint.
- No physical scrub particles.
- Sold in the US right now, from a brand that publishes its full ingredient list.
- Every remaining flagged ingredient is named on the product card rather than quietly left out.
Ingredient lists last checked 2026-09-29. Formulas change - if you spot a discrepancy, the published list on the brand's own site wins and we want to know.

Reading the Active Ingredients panel
Sunscreen is regulated as an over-the-counter drug in the US, which means it carries a Drug Facts label with an Active Ingredients panel listing every filter and its exact percentage. This is the single most useful box on any product this site covers: it is not marketing, it is a required declaration, and it settles the mineral-or-not question in five seconds.
| Active ingredient | Type | What it means for sensitive skin |
|---|---|---|
| Zinc oxide | Mineral | Broad spectrum including UVA1; the gentlest option |
| Titanium dioxide | Mineral | Strong UVB, weaker long UVA; often paired with zinc |
| Avobenzone | Chemical | The main UVA filter in US chemical sunscreens |
| Octinoxate | Chemical | UVB filter; a common stinging culprit |
| Octisalate, homosalate | Chemical | UVB filters, frequently used as solvents too |
| Oxybenzone | Chemical | The most reported for contact and photo-contact reactions |
One point worth being precise about: percentages tell you about filter load, not about SPF directly. A 19.5% zinc oxide product can be SPF 30 while a product with 11% total mineral filter reaches SPF 50, because the base formulation and film-forming properties do a lot of the work. Use the panel to confirm mineral-only, and the SPF number for strength.
The picks, in order
1. Tinted mineral SPF with no niacinamide
EltaMD UV Physical Broad-Spectrum SPF 41

Illustrative photo - not the product.
Mineral-only and tinted with iron oxide, so the cast problem largely disappears. It is also the EltaMD that does not contain niacinamide, which matters if that ingredient flushes you.
Filters: Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide (mineral only)
What is in it
- Zinc oxide
- Titanium dioxide
- Iron oxide (tint)
- Quercetin
Best for
Tinted mineral SPF with no niacinamide
Strengths
- Mineral filters only - no chemical UV absorbers
- Iron oxide tint cancels the white cast and adds visible-light coverage
- No niacinamide, unlike the better-known UV Clear
- No added fragrance
Trade-offs
- One tint shade - it will not match every skin tone
- Thick; it needs working in
Who should skip it: If your skin tone is much deeper or much fairer than the single shade, an untinted mineral plus your own tint will look better.

2. Mineral-only SPF 50 that still spreads
La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral Zinc Oxide Sunscreen SPF 50

Illustrative photo - not the product.
Mineral-only filters at SPF 50, fragrance-free, in a fluid base that actually spreads instead of dragging. The trade is a visible cast on deeper skin tones, which the tinted version solves.
Filters: Titanium dioxide 6%, zinc oxide 5%
What is in it
- Titanium dioxide 6%
- Zinc oxide 5%
- Dimethicone
Best for
Mineral-only SPF 50 that still spreads
Strengths
- 100% mineral - titanium dioxide 6% and zinc oxide 5%, no chemical filters
- SPF 50 with a genuinely light fluid texture
- No added fragrance
- Layers under makeup without pilling
Trade-offs
- Leaves a white cast on medium and deep skin tones
- The fluid finish is matte - dry skin needs moisturizer under it
Who should skip it: If a white cast is a dealbreaker, go straight to a tinted mineral formula - untinted zinc always casts.

3. Zinc-only SPF with a moisturizer built in
Vanicream Facial Moisturizer SPF 30

Illustrative photo - not the product.
Zinc oxide at 19.5% - the highest single-filter load here - with five ceramides and squalane in the base. It is a moisturizer and a sunscreen in one step, which is exactly what a short routine needs.
Filters: Zinc oxide 19.5%
What is in it
- Zinc oxide 19.5%
- Ceramides EOP, NG, NP, AS and AP
- Squalane
- Glycerin
Best for
Zinc-only SPF with a moisturizer built in
Strengths
- Zinc oxide only at 19.5% - no titanium dioxide, no chemical filters
- Five ceramides plus squalane, so it moisturizes properly
- No fragrance, masking fragrance, lanolin, parabens or formaldehyde releasers
- Collapses two steps into one
Trade-offs
- SPF 30, not 50 - you need to reapply more attentively
- A high zinc load means a real white cast
Who should skip it: If you are outdoors for hours or want SPF 50, step up to a dedicated high-SPF mineral formula.

4. The cheapest mineral-only face SPF that is worth using
CeraVe 100% Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30

Illustrative photo - not the product.
Mineral-only filters and ceramides at a drugstore price. It does contain niacinamide, so it is not the pick if that is your trigger - but for most people it is the best value here.
Filters: Titanium dioxide 6%, zinc oxide 5%
What is in it
- Titanium dioxide 6%
- Zinc oxide 5%
- Ceramides
- Niacinamide
Best for
The cheapest mineral-only face SPF that is worth using
Strengths
- 100% mineral filters - titanium dioxide 6%, zinc oxide 5%
- Ceramides in the base
- No added fragrance
- The lowest price of any mineral SPF on this page
Trade-offs
- Contains niacinamide
- SPF 30 and a noticeable cast
Who should skip it: Skip if niacinamide flushes you - the La Roche-Posay mineral fluid is the closest niacinamide-free swap.
Ingredient list read at INCIDecoder - CeraVe 100% Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30.
5. High-SPF mineral for long days outside
Blue Lizard Sensitive Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50+

Illustrative photo - not the product.
Mineral-only at SPF 50+, fragrance-free and paraben-free, in a water-resistant base. It is the one to take on a hike rather than the one to wear under makeup.
Filters: Zinc oxide 10%, titanium dioxide 8%
What is in it
- Zinc oxide 10%
- Titanium dioxide 8%
- Tocopheryl acetate
Best for
High-SPF mineral for long days outside
Strengths
- Mineral only - zinc oxide 10% and titanium dioxide 8%
- SPF 50+ with water resistance
- No fragrance, no parabens, no chemical filters
- Large bottle - practical for face and body
Trade-offs
- Thick and noticeably casting
- Contains beeswax, so it is not vegan
Who should skip it: Not the pick for daily wear under makeup - it is too heavy. Use a fluid mineral for that.

What we screened out, and why
These are products you will find recommended elsewhere for this exact search. Each one is excluded here for a specific, checkable reason - not because it is a bad product, but because it does not clear the screen above.
Mineral sunscreens with added fragrance
The point of choosing a mineral filter is to reduce the number of things your skin has to tolerate. Adding fragrance to the base undoes most of that, and fragrance is the leading cause of cosmetic contact allergy.
Hybrid mineral-and-chemical formulas sold as mineral
A sunscreen can be marketed on its zinc oxide and still contain octinoxate, octisalate or avobenzone. If mineral-only is what you want, the Active Ingredients panel is the only place that answers the question.
Mineral sprays and powders
Almost nobody applies enough from a spray to reach the tested SPF, and the aerosol carrier is usually alcohol-based. A mineral powder is a touch-up, not sun protection.
Mineral sunscreens with essential oils in the base
Common in the natural and reef-safe end of the category. Lavender, citrus and tea tree oils are fragrance under a botanical name, and several are directly irritating on compromised skin.
The full list of what we flag, what each ingredient is and where the evidence is genuinely mixed lives on ingredients to avoid with rosacea.
How to choose between these five
- 1You want mineral-only with no cast and no niacinamide. EltaMD UV Physical SPF 41. The tint solves the cast; the formula skips niacinamide.
- 2You want the highest SPF that still spreads properly. La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral SPF 50 - a fluid rather than a cream.
- 3You want sunscreen and moisturizer in one step. Vanicream Facial Moisturizer SPF 30. Zinc oxide 19.5% with five ceramides and squalane.
- 4You want the cheapest mineral-only option worth using. CeraVe 100% Mineral SPF 30, which does contain niacinamide.
- 5You will be outdoors for hours. Blue Lizard Sensitive SPF 50+, for the water resistance and the higher combined filter load.
Two of these five contain niacinamide, which most people tolerate and a minority flush from - the detail is at is niacinamide good for rosacea, and the niacinamide-free shortlist is at best sunscreens for rosacea without niacinamide.
Zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, if you have to pick one
Zinc oxide covers a wider range of the UVA spectrum, including the long UVA1 wavelengths most involved in the chronic vascular damage that matters for persistent facial redness. Titanium dioxide is a stronger UVB filter and tends to feel lighter and look less grey, which is why so many formulas pair the two. If a product uses only one filter and you are choosing on protection, choose zinc.
The full comparison, with what each one does across the spectrum, is at zinc oxide vs titanium dioxide, and the question of whether mineral is genuinely better for reactive skin is argued out at mineral vs chemical sunscreen for rosacea.
Applying enough of it
- Two fingers' worth for a face and neck. The tested SPF assumes 2 mg per square centimetre, and most people apply a quarter of that.
- Let it set for ten minutes before makeup or a hat brim rubs it off.
- Reapply every two hours outdoors, and after swimming or heavy sweating regardless of what the bottle claims.
- Do not rely on a moisturizer with SPF as your only protection - the amount you apply is nowhere near enough.
- Wear it on overcast days. UVA passes through cloud essentially unimpeded, and it is the band that drives long-term vascular change.
If sunscreen itself is the thing that stings, the problem is usually the base rather than the filters, and the first thing to check is the list for denatured alcohol and essential oils - the full set of things to scan for is at sunscreen ingredients to avoid with rosacea.
How we chose
Active Ingredients panels and full ingredient lists read on each brand's own site and on INCIDecoder, with the source linked on every pick. Mineral-only status was confirmed from the Drug Facts panel rather than from front-of-pack claims. Questions people ask
What is the best mineral sunscreen for sensitive skin?
EltaMD UV Physical SPF 41. It uses mineral filters only, carries no added fragrance and no niacinamide, and its iron oxide tint cancels the white cast that stops most people wearing mineral sunscreen consistently.
Is mineral sunscreen better for sensitive skin?
Generally yes, because zinc oxide and titanium dioxide stay on the skin surface and scatter UV rather than absorbing into the upper layers and converting it to heat. That produces fewer stinging reactions on inflamed or barrier-damaged skin.
How do I know a sunscreen is really mineral only?
Read the Active Ingredients panel on the Drug Facts label. If it lists only zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, it is mineral only. If avobenzone, octinoxate, octisalate, homosalate or oxybenzone appear, it is a chemical or hybrid formula however it is marketed.
Does mineral sunscreen have to leave a white cast?
No. An iron oxide tint cancels it and adds visible-light protection, and lower-viscosity mineral fluids spread thin enough that the cast largely disappears. A high single-filter zinc load is the formulation most likely to show.
Is SPF 30 enough for sensitive skin?
SPF 30 applied properly beats SPF 50 applied thinly, so the honest answer is that the amount matters more than the number. For long periods outdoors, or if persistent facial redness is your concern, SPF 50 with a high zinc load is the better choice.
