Mineral SPF & Sun Protection
Best sunscreens for rosacea type 2
Papules as well as flushing - which rules out most of the comfortable options.
By Michael W. · Last updated
The short answer
La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral SPF 50 is the best sunscreen for rosacea type 2: mineral-only filters in a light fluid that does not sit heavily over active papules, at the SPF level this subtype benefits most from. CeraVe 100% Mineral SPF 30 is the budget pick, EltaMD UV Physical SPF 41 is the one if you want a tint to even out the bumps visually, and Vanicream Facial Moisturizer SPF 30 collapses two steps into one when you are also using a topical active.

Rosacea type 2 is the papulopustular subtype: persistent central facial redness with crops of inflamed papules and pustules on top of it. It is the subtype most often mistaken for adult acne, and the mistake matters here because the sunscreen aisle sells two different things to those two faces. Acne-targeted sunscreens are mattifying, often alcohol-led and frequently carry salicylic acid. None of that helps type 2 and most of it hurts.
What type 2 actually needs from a sunscreen is the same mineral, fragrance-free filter set the rest of this site recommends, in a texture light enough to apply over sore bumps without dragging, and with nothing in it that fights the topical treatment you are probably already using. That is a narrower brief than it sounds.
The screen
Every product on this page had to clear all of the following before it was considered on its merits. This is the exclusion step, and it runs before any recommendation.
- No added fragrance or parfum anywhere in the ingredient list.
- No essential oils, including ones declared under a botanical name.
- No denatured alcohol, witch hazel, menthol, camphor or peppermint.
- No physical scrub particles.
- Sold in the US right now, from a brand that publishes its full ingredient list.
- Every remaining flagged ingredient is named on the product card rather than quietly left out.
Ingredient lists last checked 2026-09-29. Formulas change - if you spot a discrepancy, the published list on the brand's own site wins and we want to know.

Why sun protection matters more in type 2
Sun exposure is the most consistently reported rosacea trigger in the National Rosacea Society's own patient surveys, across every subtype. In type 2 there is a second reason to care: the prescription and over-the-counter actives used for papulopustular rosacea - azelaic acid among them - work on inflamed skin, and uncontrolled UV exposure keeps feeding the inflammation they are trying to settle. Sunscreen is not a nice-to-have alongside treatment; it is the thing that lets treatment hold.
| What type 2 brings | What it rules out | What it points to |
|---|---|---|
| Papules and pustules | Thick waxy creams and sticks that drag | Fluids and light lotions |
| An often-oily central face | Alcohol-led mattifying formulas | Light mineral fluid, blotting paper if needed |
| Active topical treatment | Anything with an added exfoliating acid | A plain, inert base |
| Inflamed barrier | Chemical filters that sting on contact | Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide |
| Visible bumps and redness | Nothing, but a tint helps | Iron oxide tinted mineral SPF |
The picks, in order
1. Mineral-only SPF 50 that still spreads
La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral Zinc Oxide Sunscreen SPF 50

Illustrative photo - not the product.
Mineral-only filters at SPF 50, fragrance-free, in a fluid base that actually spreads instead of dragging. The trade is a visible cast on deeper skin tones, which the tinted version solves.
Filters: Titanium dioxide 6%, zinc oxide 5%
What is in it
- Titanium dioxide 6%
- Zinc oxide 5%
- Dimethicone
Best for
Mineral-only SPF 50 that still spreads
Strengths
- 100% mineral - titanium dioxide 6% and zinc oxide 5%, no chemical filters
- SPF 50 with a genuinely light fluid texture
- No added fragrance
- Layers under makeup without pilling
Trade-offs
- Leaves a white cast on medium and deep skin tones
- The fluid finish is matte - dry skin needs moisturizer under it
Who should skip it: If a white cast is a dealbreaker, go straight to a tinted mineral formula - untinted zinc always casts.

2. The cheapest mineral-only face SPF that is worth using
CeraVe 100% Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30

Illustrative photo - not the product.
Mineral-only filters and ceramides at a drugstore price. It does contain niacinamide, so it is not the pick if that is your trigger - but for most people it is the best value here.
Filters: Titanium dioxide 6%, zinc oxide 5%
What is in it
- Titanium dioxide 6%
- Zinc oxide 5%
- Ceramides
- Niacinamide
Best for
The cheapest mineral-only face SPF that is worth using
Strengths
- 100% mineral filters - titanium dioxide 6%, zinc oxide 5%
- Ceramides in the base
- No added fragrance
- The lowest price of any mineral SPF on this page
Trade-offs
- Contains niacinamide
- SPF 30 and a noticeable cast
Who should skip it: Skip if niacinamide flushes you - the La Roche-Posay mineral fluid is the closest niacinamide-free swap.
Ingredient list read at INCIDecoder - CeraVe 100% Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30.
3. Tinted mineral SPF with no niacinamide
EltaMD UV Physical Broad-Spectrum SPF 41

Illustrative photo - not the product.
Mineral-only and tinted with iron oxide, so the cast problem largely disappears. It is also the EltaMD that does not contain niacinamide, which matters if that ingredient flushes you.
Filters: Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide (mineral only)
What is in it
- Zinc oxide
- Titanium dioxide
- Iron oxide (tint)
- Quercetin
Best for
Tinted mineral SPF with no niacinamide
Strengths
- Mineral filters only - no chemical UV absorbers
- Iron oxide tint cancels the white cast and adds visible-light coverage
- No niacinamide, unlike the better-known UV Clear
- No added fragrance
Trade-offs
- One tint shade - it will not match every skin tone
- Thick; it needs working in
Who should skip it: If your skin tone is much deeper or much fairer than the single shade, an untinted mineral plus your own tint will look better.
Ingredient list read at INCIDecoder - EltaMD UV Physical Broad-Spectrum SPF 41.
4. Zinc-only SPF with a moisturizer built in
Vanicream Facial Moisturizer SPF 30

Illustrative photo - not the product.
Zinc oxide at 19.5% - the highest single-filter load here - with five ceramides and squalane in the base. It is a moisturizer and a sunscreen in one step, which is exactly what a short routine needs.
Filters: Zinc oxide 19.5%
What is in it
- Zinc oxide 19.5%
- Ceramides EOP, NG, NP, AS and AP
- Squalane
- Glycerin
Best for
Zinc-only SPF with a moisturizer built in
Strengths
- Zinc oxide only at 19.5% - no titanium dioxide, no chemical filters
- Five ceramides plus squalane, so it moisturizes properly
- No fragrance, masking fragrance, lanolin, parabens or formaldehyde releasers
- Collapses two steps into one
Trade-offs
- SPF 30, not 50 - you need to reapply more attentively
- A high zinc load means a real white cast
Who should skip it: If you are outdoors for hours or want SPF 50, step up to a dedicated high-SPF mineral formula.

What we screened out, and why
These are products you will find recommended elsewhere for this exact search. Each one is excluded here for a specific, checkable reason - not because it is a bad product, but because it does not clear the screen above.
Rich mineral creams and sticks
A thick, waxy mineral formula over a face with active papules and pustules is uncomfortable and hard to apply evenly. A fluid or lotion delivers the same filters without dragging across inflamed bumps.
Sunscreens with added salicylic acid
Sold for exactly this problem on the assumption that the bumps are acne. They are not acne, the acid does not clear them, and daily exfoliation on a rosacea barrier makes everything else worse.
Alcohol-based mattifying sunscreens
Type 2 rosacea often comes with an oily central face, and the mattifying sunscreens aimed at that face lead with denatured alcohol. The National Rosacea Society names alcohol-containing products among cosmetic flare triggers.
Fragranced sunscreens of any filter type
Non-negotiable on this site and particularly unwise here, where the skin barrier is already inflamed across the central face.
The full list of what we flag, what each ingredient is and where the evidence is genuinely mixed lives on ingredients to avoid with rosacea.
How to choose between these four
- 1You want the highest SPF in the lightest texture. La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral SPF 50. A fluid, so it goes over bumps without dragging.
- 2You want the cheapest option that still clears the screen. CeraVe 100% Mineral SPF 30, with the niacinamide caveat.
- 3You want the redness and the bumps evened out visually. EltaMD UV Physical SPF 41, tinted with iron oxide and free of niacinamide.
- 4You are using azelaic acid at night and want one step in the morning. Vanicream Facial Moisturizer SPF 30 - zinc oxide 19.5% with five ceramides.
If niacinamide is a trigger for you, two of these are off the list; the niacinamide-free shortlist across the whole category is at best sunscreens for rosacea without niacinamide.
Sunscreen alongside azelaic acid
Azelaic acid is the active most used for papulopustular rosacea that you can buy without a prescription, and the practical question people have is whether it can share a face with mineral sunscreen. It can, and the sequencing is straightforward: azelaic acid at night, sunscreen in the morning. Using both in the morning is possible but the acid under an occlusive mineral film is more likely to sting.
The products and the ramp-up schedule are at best azelaic acid products for rosacea, and if the first two weeks are rough, that is addressed honestly at does azelaic acid make rosacea worse before it gets better.
A type 2 morning routine
- 1Rinse with lukewarm water, or use a non-foaming cleanser if you used an active overnight.
- 2One light moisturizer, applied without rubbing over active papules.
- 3Two fingers' worth of mineral sunscreen, patted rather than massaged where the skin is sore.
- 4Let it set for ten minutes before anything else touches your face.
- 5Reapply at two hours outdoors. A tinted mineral fluid is easier to reapply over the day than a thick cream.
The cleanser side of the type 2 question - what to wash an oily, bumpy, flushed face with - is at best face wash for rosacea and acne, and the full daily structure is at a routine for rosacea and acne.

Questions people ask
What is the best sunscreen for rosacea type 2?
La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral SPF 50. It is mineral-only and fragrance-free in a light fluid texture, which matters when you are applying it over active papules, and SPF 50 is the right level for a subtype where sun exposure keeps feeding the inflammation.
What is rosacea type 2?
The papulopustular subtype: persistent redness across the central face with recurring crops of inflamed papules and pustules. It is the one most often mistaken for adult acne, and it does not respond to acne treatments.
Can I use an acne sunscreen if my rosacea has bumps?
Better not to. Acne-targeted sunscreens are usually mattifying with denatured alcohol high in the list, and some carry salicylic acid. Neither clears rosacea papules, and both tend to make the surrounding redness worse.
Does sunscreen clog pores and cause more pustules?
A thick, ester-rich mineral cream can feel congesting, but the pustules of papulopustular rosacea are not blocked pores and are not caused by sunscreen. A light mineral fluid is the straightforward way to avoid the question entirely.
Should I wear sunscreen while using azelaic acid?
Yes, and it matters more than usual. Use the azelaic acid at night and the sunscreen in the morning. UV exposure keeps the inflammation the acid is working on topped up, so skipping sunscreen undercuts the treatment.
