Mineral SPF & Sun Protection
EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46 review
The best finish in the category, and two facts that change who it suits.
By Michael W. · Last updated
The short answer
Genuinely excellent to wear - weightless, almost no cast, fragrance-free. Two facts get left out of most recommendations: it is not a mineral sunscreen (octinoxate 7.5% is a chemical filter), and it contains niacinamide. Both change who it suits.

This is the sunscreen most likely to be recommended to you if you mention rosacea, by a dermatologist or by anyone on the internet. The recommendation is not wrong - the finish is the best in the category and the formula is fragrance-free. But two things about it are usually omitted, and both are the kind of thing this site exists to check.
Fact one: it is not a mineral sunscreen
The active ingredients are zinc oxide 9% and octinoxate 7.5%. Octinoxate is a chemical UV filter. UV Clear is therefore a hybrid sunscreen, not a mineral one.
That is not a safety problem - octinoxate is an approved filter and has been in use for decades. It matters because a great many people seek out mineral sunscreen specifically, for the reasons set out on the mineral roundup, and are then handed this product as though it were one. If mineral-only is your criterion, this does not meet it.
It is also the reason the finish is so good. Chemical filters are absorbed into the upper layers rather than sitting on the surface, so there is nothing to scatter light and nothing to look gray.
Fact two: it contains niacinamide
Niacinamide is third on the inactive ingredient list. For most people that is neutral or positive - it has good evidence for redness and barrier function, and its presence here is deliberate.
For the minority of people with rosacea who flush from niacinamide, it makes this the wrong sunscreen, and the cruelty of it is that this is the product they will be recommended most often. If that is you, EltaMD UV Physical is the same brand without it.
What else is in it
- Sodium hyaluronate - a humectant, which is why it does not feel drying like many high-SPF formulas
- Cyclopentasiloxane - the silicone that gives it the weightless slip
- Tocopheryl acetate - vitamin E, antioxidant
- Lactic acid - present at a low level for pH adjustment rather than as an exfoliant
- No fragrance and no essential oils
The screen
Every product on this page had to clear all of the following before it was considered on its merits. This is the exclusion step, and it runs before any recommendation.
- No added fragrance or parfum anywhere in the ingredient list.
- No essential oils, including ones declared under a botanical name.
- No denatured alcohol, witch hazel, menthol, camphor or peppermint.
- No physical scrub particles.
- Sold in the US right now, from a brand that publishes its full ingredient list.
- Every remaining flagged ingredient is named on the product card rather than quietly left out.
Ingredient lists last checked 2026-09-29. Formulas change - if you spot a discrepancy, the published list on the brand's own site wins and we want to know.

The picks, in order
1. A weightless finish, if the two caveats do not apply to you
EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46

Illustrative photo - not the product.
The most recommended sunscreen in this category, and two facts get left out of most recommendations: it is not mineral-only - it contains octinoxate - and it contains niacinamide. Both matter here.
Filters: Zinc oxide 9%, octinoxate 7.5%
What is in it
- Zinc oxide 9%
- Octinoxate 7.5%
- Niacinamide
- Sodium hyaluronate
Best for
A weightless finish, if the two caveats do not apply to you
Strengths
- Genuinely weightless; the best cosmetic finish of any pick here
- Almost no white cast
- No added fragrance
- Sodium hyaluronate keeps it from drying skin out
Trade-offs
- Not a mineral sunscreen - octinoxate 7.5% is a chemical filter
- Contains niacinamide, a flushing trigger for a minority with rosacea
Who should skip it: Skip it if you specifically want mineral-only protection, or if niacinamide flushes you. Both are common reasons in this category.

2. Tinted mineral SPF with no niacinamide
EltaMD UV Physical Broad-Spectrum SPF 41

Illustrative photo - not the product.
Mineral-only and tinted with iron oxide, so the cast problem largely disappears. It is also the EltaMD that does not contain niacinamide, which matters if that ingredient flushes you.
Filters: Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide (mineral only)
What is in it
- Zinc oxide
- Titanium dioxide
- Iron oxide (tint)
- Quercetin
Best for
Tinted mineral SPF with no niacinamide
Strengths
- Mineral filters only - no chemical UV absorbers
- Iron oxide tint cancels the white cast and adds visible-light coverage
- No niacinamide, unlike the better-known UV Clear
- No added fragrance
Trade-offs
- One tint shade - it will not match every skin tone
- Thick; it needs working in
Who should skip it: If your skin tone is much deeper or much fairer than the single shade, an untinted mineral plus your own tint will look better.

3. Mineral-only SPF 50 that still spreads
La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral Zinc Oxide Sunscreen SPF 50

Illustrative photo - not the product.
Mineral-only filters at SPF 50, fragrance-free, in a fluid base that actually spreads instead of dragging. The trade is a visible cast on deeper skin tones, which the tinted version solves.
Filters: Titanium dioxide 6%, zinc oxide 5%
What is in it
- Titanium dioxide 6%
- Zinc oxide 5%
- Dimethicone
Best for
Mineral-only SPF 50 that still spreads
Strengths
- 100% mineral - titanium dioxide 6% and zinc oxide 5%, no chemical filters
- SPF 50 with a genuinely light fluid texture
- No added fragrance
- Layers under makeup without pilling
Trade-offs
- Leaves a white cast on medium and deep skin tones
- The fluid finish is matte - dry skin needs moisturizer under it
Who should skip it: If a white cast is a dealbreaker, go straight to a tinted mineral formula - untinted zinc always casts.

Who should buy it
- Anyone who has abandoned mineral sunscreen because of the cast
- People who tolerate niacinamide and have no objection to a chemical filter
- Anyone wearing sunscreen under makeup daily - the finish is the best here
Who should not
- Anyone who specifically wants mineral-only protection - this is a hybrid
- Anyone who flushes from niacinamide - UV Physical is the swap
- Anyone who has reacted to a chemical filter before
How we reviewed it
By reading the published drug facts panel and inactive-ingredient list, and reporting what is in it - including the two things that get omitted elsewhere. We have not run a controlled trial and do not claim to have. Method at how we choose.
Questions people ask
Is EltaMD UV Clear good for rosacea?
For many people yes - fragrance-free, weightless, almost no cast. Two caveats decide it: it is not mineral-only (octinoxate 7.5% is a chemical filter) and it contains niacinamide. If either matters to you, EltaMD UV Physical is the alternative.
Is EltaMD UV Clear a mineral sunscreen?
No. Its actives are zinc oxide 9% and octinoxate 7.5%. Octinoxate is a chemical filter, which makes UV Clear a hybrid. That is also why its finish is so much better than a mineral-only formula.
Does EltaMD UV Clear contain niacinamide?
Yes, third on the inactive ingredient list. Deliberate, and supported for redness - but a flushing trigger for a minority of people with rosacea, who are the people most likely to be recommended this product.
What is the difference between UV Clear and UV Physical?
UV Clear is a hybrid with a chemical filter, untinted, contains niacinamide, SPF 46. UV Physical is mineral-only, tinted with iron oxide, contains no niacinamide, SPF 41. They are genuinely different products despite the shared brand.
Is EltaMD worth the price?
For the finish, if that is your bottleneck. If you have abandoned sunscreen repeatedly because of cast or texture, a product you will actually wear daily is worth paying for. If cheaper mineral formulas already work for you, it does not add protection.
