La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair review

The best-textured fragrance-free cream in the category, with one ingredient to check first.

By Michael W. · Last updated

The short answer

The best-textured fragrance-free moisturizer we screened: it absorbs in seconds and layers under mineral sunscreen without pilling, with ceramide NP and glycerin doing the barrier work. Niacinamide sits fifth, which is the one thing to check against your own history.

A sleek cosmetic jar standing on a marble surface

If you have tried to wear a ceramide cream under a high-zinc mineral sunscreen and watched the whole thing roll off in little gray pills, you already know why texture is not a trivial property. This is the cream that solves that, and the reason it appears on several pages of this site.

What is actually in it

  • Prebiotic thermal water as the base. La Roche-Posay's own spring water. Whether it outperforms plain water is a brand claim we cannot verify independently, so we are not going to repeat it as fact.
  • Glycerin, second - a humectant at a meaningful concentration.
  • Dimethicone, third - the occlusive, and the reason it feels silky rather than greasy.
  • Niacinamide, fifth - barrier support and redness, and the ingredient that decides who this suits.
  • Ceramide NP - the most abundant ceramide type in human skin.
  • Myristic and palmitic acid - free fatty acids, the third component of the barrier lipid mixture.
  • Tocopherol - vitamin E, an antioxidant.

That is a considered formula. Ceramide plus fatty acids plus glycerin plus an occlusive covers three of the four things a barrier cream should do, and the only absence worth noting is cholesterol - which CeraVe includes and this does not.

The niacinamide question

Niacinamide is fifth on the list, which puts it at a real concentration rather than a trace. It has good evidence for redness and barrier function, and it causes flushing in some people with rosacea. Both of those are true and neither cancels the other.

This is a leave-on product, so exposure is hours rather than the under-a-minute of a cleanser. That makes it higher-stakes than the Toleriane cleanser. If niacinamide has flushed you before, this is the wrong cream and CeraVe Moisturizing Cream is the closest niacinamide-free swap. The full treatment is at is niacinamide good for rosacea.

Light, fast-absorbing, fragrance-free, with ceramide NP and glycerin doing the barrier work. Niacinamide sits fifth on the list, which is the only reason it is not our first pick for everyone.

Fragrance-free

What is in it

  • Niacinamide
  • Ceramide NP
  • Glycerin
  • Prebiotic thermal water

Best for

Daily moisturizer that disappears under sunscreen

Strengths

  • Absorbs in seconds - layers cleanly under mineral SPF
  • Ceramide NP and glycerin for barrier and water
  • No added fragrance
  • Works year-round for most skin types

Trade-offs

  • Niacinamide is fifth on the ingredient list - a flushing trigger for some
  • Not rich enough on its own for very dry skin in winter

Who should skip it: Skip if niacinamide reliably flushes you. Also skip as a standalone if your skin is very dry - layer it over an occlusive.

Who should buy it

  • Anyone whose morning routine involves mineral sunscreen and whose current cream pills under it
  • Normal to combination skin that finds ceramide creams too heavy for daytime
  • People who have used niacinamide without problems

Who should not

  • Anyone who flushes from niacinamide - the swap is easy and cheaper
  • Very dry skin using this as its only moisturizer. Layer it over something occlusive at night instead
  • Anyone troubleshooting a reaction, where eleven ingredients is the better instrument

Questions people ask

Is La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair good for rosacea?

For most people yes - fragrance-free, with ceramide NP, glycerin and fatty acids, in a texture that layers under sunscreen properly. The one thing to check is niacinamide, which sits fifth on the list and is a flushing trigger for a minority.

Does Toleriane Double Repair contain fragrance?

No. There is no fragrance or parfum on its published ingredient list and no essential oils either.

Is it good for very dry skin?

Not on its own in winter. It is a light lotion with dimethicone as the occlusive, which is not enough for genuinely dry skin in cold weather. Layer it over something richer, or keep it for daytime only.

Can I use it under sunscreen?

This is what it is best at. It absorbs in seconds and does not pill under mineral SPF, which is a common failure mode for thicker ceramide creams.

Is it worth the extra cost over CeraVe?

For the texture, and only for the texture. CeraVe gives you more ceramides and cholesterol for less. If your cream pills under sunscreen or feels too heavy in the morning, this solves a real problem. If it does not, CeraVe is the better value.
