Rosacea trigger list

The full inventory, sourced - and why your own list will be shorter.

By Michael W. · Last updated

The short answer

Sun, heat, alcohol, spicy food, stress, wind and cold are the triggers most consistently reported. But triggers are highly individual - the National Rosacea Society recommends keeping a diary precisely because the published list is much longer than any one person's actual list.

Some links on this page are affiliate links. If you buy through one, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you - it is what funds the site. It does not change what gets recommended or in what order. Full disclosure.

If your skincare is already bland and things are still bad, the answer is often not in the bathroom cabinet. This page is the other half of the picture - and it is worth reading before you buy another product.

The inventory below comes from the National Rosacea Society's published trigger list. It is long, and that length is the point: almost nobody reacts to all of it, and the organization's own advice is to keep a diary rather than to avoid everything on the page.

Foods

  • Liver
  • Yogurt, sour cream, cheese
  • Chocolate, vanilla
  • Soy sauce, yeast extract, vinegar
  • Eggplant, avocados, spinach, broad-leaf beans
  • Citrus fruits, tomatoes, bananas
  • Spicy foods
  • Foods high in histamine

Beverages

  • Alcohol - red wine, beer, bourbon, gin, vodka, champagne
  • Hot drinks - coffee, tea, hot chocolate

On hot drinks specifically: the temperature is doing more of the work than the caffeine for most people. An iced coffee is frequently fine where the same coffee hot is not, which is a cheap thing to test.

Temperature and environment

  • Saunas, hot baths, overheating
  • Warm indoor environments
  • Sun
  • Wind
  • Cold
  • Humidity

Emotional and physical

  • Stress and anxiety
  • Exercise
  • Physically demanding work

Exercise is the one people most often try to avoid, and it is the one least worth avoiding. Cooling strategies - a cold drink, a damp towel on the neck, exercising in a cooler room, splitting a long session into shorter ones - manage it far better than giving it up does.

Medical conditions and drugs

  • Frequent flushing
  • Menopause
  • Chronic cough
  • Caffeine withdrawal
  • Vasodilators
  • Topical steroids

Cosmetics and skincare

The National Rosacea Society names cosmetics and hair sprays containing alcohol, witch hazel or fragrances, hydro-alcoholic and acetone substances, and - broadly - any substance that causes redness or stinging.

That last phrase is the most useful sentence in the whole inventory. If a product stings, it is a trigger for you, regardless of what is on its label or what anyone recommends. The full ingredient breakdown is at ingredients to avoid with rosacea.

The screen

Every product on this page had to clear all of the following before it was considered on its merits. This is the exclusion step, and it runs before any recommendation.

  • No added fragrance or parfum anywhere in the ingredient list.
  • No essential oils, including ones declared under a botanical name.
  • No denatured alcohol, witch hazel, menthol, camphor or peppermint.
  • No physical scrub particles.
  • Sold in the US right now, from a brand that publishes its full ingredient list.
  • Every remaining flagged ingredient is named on the product card rather than quietly left out.

Ingredient lists last checked 2026-09-29. Formulas change - if you spot a discrepancy, the published list on the brand's own site wins and we want to know.

How to find your own list

  1. 1Keep a diary for four weeks. Date, what you ate and drank, weather, stress level, exercise, products used, and whether you flared. One line a day.
  2. 2Do not try to eliminate anything yet. You are collecting data, and elimination first contaminates it.
  3. 3Look for repeats after four weeks. Something appearing before three or more flares is a candidate.
  4. 4Test one candidate at a time. Remove it for two weeks, then reintroduce deliberately.
  5. 5Keep what does not trigger you. The goal is the shortest possible avoid list, not the longest.

Four weeks feels slow and is far faster than years of vague suspicion. Most people find three to six genuine triggers out of that long list, and knowing which three is worth more than avoiding all forty.

The picks, in order

1. Mineral-only SPF 50 that still spreads

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral Zinc Oxide Sunscreen SPF 50

A sunscreen bottle on sand beside clear blue water

Illustrative photo - not the product.

Mineral-only filters at SPF 50, fragrance-free, in a fluid base that actually spreads instead of dragging. The trade is a visible cast on deeper skin tones, which the tinted version solves.

Fragrance-free

Filters: Titanium dioxide 6%, zinc oxide 5%

What is in it

  • Titanium dioxide 6%
  • Zinc oxide 5%
  • Dimethicone

Best for

Mineral-only SPF 50 that still spreads

Strengths

  • 100% mineral - titanium dioxide 6% and zinc oxide 5%, no chemical filters
  • SPF 50 with a genuinely light fluid texture
  • No added fragrance
  • Layers under makeup without pilling

Trade-offs

  • Leaves a white cast on medium and deep skin tones
  • The fluid finish is matte - dry skin needs moisturizer under it

Who should skip it: If a white cast is a dealbreaker, go straight to a tinted mineral formula - untinted zinc always casts.

2. Barrier repair on a budget

CeraVe Moisturizing Cream

A hand holding a plain white cream container

Three ceramides plus cholesterol and petrolatum, no fragrance, in a tub big enough to use on your body too. This is the cream most dermatology offices hand out, and the formula earns it.

Fragrance-free

What is in it

  • Ceramide NP, AP and EOP
  • Petrolatum
  • Sodium Hyaluronate
  • Cholesterol

Best for

Barrier repair on a budget

Strengths

  • Ceramides NP, AP and EOP with cholesterol - a complete lipid set
  • Petrolatum for occlusion plus hyaluronic acid for water
  • No added fragrance
  • Very low cost per ounce in the large tub

Trade-offs

  • Thick - it needs warming between your palms in winter
  • The tub invites fingers into the product; the pump version is more hygienic

Who should skip it: Oily or acne-prone skin may find the richness too much for daytime; use the lotion version instead.

3. A rescue balm for the worst two days of a flare

La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5

Skincare bottles resting on a soft white towel

Illustrative photo - not the product.

A thick fragrance-free balm with panthenol, madecassoside and shea butter. This is a short-term repair layer for raw, stinging patches, not a daily moisturizer for the whole face.

Fragrance-free

What is in it

  • Panthenol
  • Madecassoside
  • Shea butter
  • Glycerin

Best for

A rescue balm for the worst two days of a flare

Strengths

  • Panthenol and madecassoside - both well studied for irritated skin
  • No added fragrance
  • Thick enough to act as an overnight occlusive layer
  • A small tube lasts a long time in spot use

Trade-offs

  • Heavy and slightly tacky - not a daily all-over cream
  • Contains chlorhexidine digluconate, which a small number of people react to

Who should skip it: If you want one cream for everyday use, this is not it - it is a targeted repair layer.

What to do during a flare a trigger caused

The same thing regardless of the cause: stop every active, drop to cleanse-moisturize-protect, lukewarm water only, and do not add a new product to fix it. The full sequence is at how to calm a rosacea flare-up.

Questions people ask

What are the most common rosacea triggers?

Sun, heat, alcohol, spicy food, stress, wind and cold are the most consistently reported. The National Rosacea Society's published inventory is much longer, and it emphasizes that triggers are highly individual.

Does coffee trigger rosacea?

Hot drinks appear on the trigger list, and for most people the temperature is doing more than the caffeine. An iced coffee is often fine where the same drink hot is not, which is worth testing before giving up coffee.

Should I avoid exercise if I have rosacea?

No. Exercise is on the trigger list and it is the item least worth avoiding. Cooling strategies - a cold drink, a damp towel on the neck, a cooler room, shorter sessions - manage the flushing far better than stopping does.

How do I identify my own rosacea triggers?

Keep a diary for four weeks recording food, drink, weather, stress, exercise, products and whether you flared, without eliminating anything yet. Then look for repeats and test one candidate at a time. Most people find three to six genuine triggers.

Are topical steroids bad for rosacea?

They appear on the National Rosacea Society's trigger list under drugs. Steroid creams can seem to help in the short term and worsen rosacea over time, including a rebound pattern on stopping. If you have been prescribed one for facial redness, raise it with the prescriber.
