Mineral SPF & Sun Protection
Best zinc oxide sunscreens for sensitive skin
Zinc-only and mineral-only are not the same claim. Almost nobody tells you which they are selling.

The short answer
Vanicream Facial Moisturizer SPF 30 is the best zinc oxide sunscreen for sensitive skin and the only zinc-only pick here - zinc oxide at 19.5% with no titanium dioxide and no chemical filters. Blue Lizard Sensitive SPF 50+ carries the highest zinc load of the high-SPF options at 10%, and La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral is the one that spreads best.
Some links on this page are affiliate links. If you buy through one, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you - it is what funds the site. It does not change what gets recommended or in what order. Full disclosure.

If you came here wanting zinc oxide specifically, the useful fact is that only one product on this page uses zinc oxide as its single filter: Vanicream Facial Moisturizer SPF 30, at 19.5%. Everything else described as a zinc sunscreen in this category pairs zinc oxide with titanium dioxide, usually because that is the only practical way to reach SPF 50 with mineral filters alone.
That distinction is not pedantry. If you are choosing zinc because you have reacted to titanium dioxide formulas, or because you want one filter rather than two while you work out what your skin tolerates, then mineral-only is not the claim you are looking for. The table below gives the actual filters and percentages for every pick, taken from the published drug facts panels.
The screen
Every product on this page had to clear all of the following before it was considered on its merits. This is the exclusion step, and it runs before any recommendation.
- No added fragrance or parfum anywhere in the ingredient list.
- No essential oils, including ones declared under a botanical name.
- No denatured alcohol, witch hazel, menthol, camphor or peppermint.
- No physical scrub particles.
- Sold in the US right now, from a brand that publishes its full ingredient list.
- Every remaining flagged ingredient is named on the product card rather than quietly left out.
Ingredient lists last checked 2026-09-29. Formulas change - if you spot a discrepancy, the published list on the brand's own site wins and we want to know.

The filters, side by side
| Product | Filters | Zinc oxide % | Zinc only? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vanicream Facial Moisturizer SPF 30 | Zinc oxide | 19.5% | Yes |
| Blue Lizard Sensitive SPF 50+ | Zinc oxide, titanium dioxide | 10% | No |
| La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral SPF 50 | Titanium dioxide, zinc oxide | 5% | No |
| CeraVe 100% Mineral SPF 30 | Titanium dioxide, zinc oxide | 5% | No |
| EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46 | Zinc oxide, octinoxate | 9% | No - octinoxate is a chemical filter |
The last row is there as a warning rather than a recommendation on this particular page. UV Clear is a good sunscreen and it is the most frequently recommended product in this category, and it is not a mineral sunscreen. If zinc oxide is your requirement, it is not your product. The wider comparison is at mineral vs chemical sunscreen for rosacea.
Why zinc rather than titanium dioxide
Both are mineral filters and both are physically inert. The practical differences are narrow: zinc oxide covers slightly further into the UVA range, titanium dioxide is marginally better in UVB, and titanium dioxide casts whiter at the same percentage. Zinc is also the one with a long history of use on irritated and broken skin, which is where its reputation in this category comes from. The full head-to-head is at zinc oxide vs titanium dioxide.
What zinc oxide does not do is avoid the white cast. A 19.5% zinc load casts more, not less, than a 5% one. There is no high-zinc sunscreen that disappears on skin, and anything claiming otherwise is either tinted or not mostly zinc. If invisibility is the priority, start at best sunscreens for sensitive skin with no white cast instead.
The picks, in order
1. Zinc-only SPF with a moisturizer built in
Vanicream Facial Moisturizer SPF 30

Zinc oxide at 19.5% - the highest single-filter load here - with five ceramides and squalane in the base. It is a moisturizer and a sunscreen in one step, which is exactly what a short routine needs.
Filters: Zinc oxide 19.5%
What is in it
- Zinc oxide 19.5%
- Ceramides EOP, NG, NP, AS and AP
- Squalane
- Glycerin
Best for
Zinc-only SPF with a moisturizer built in
Strengths
- Zinc oxide only at 19.5% - no titanium dioxide, no chemical filters
- Five ceramides plus squalane, so it moisturizes properly
- No fragrance, masking fragrance, lanolin, parabens or formaldehyde releasers
- Collapses two steps into one
Trade-offs
- SPF 30, not 50 - you need to reapply more attentively
- A high zinc load means a real white cast
Who should skip it: If you are outdoors for hours or want SPF 50, step up to a dedicated high-SPF mineral formula.

2. High-SPF mineral for long days outside
Blue Lizard Sensitive Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50+

Mineral-only at SPF 50+, fragrance-free and paraben-free, in a water-resistant base. It is the one to take on a hike rather than the one to wear under makeup.
Filters: Zinc oxide 10%, titanium dioxide 8%
What is in it
- Zinc oxide 10%
- Titanium dioxide 8%
- Tocopheryl acetate
Best for
High-SPF mineral for long days outside
Strengths
- Mineral only - zinc oxide 10% and titanium dioxide 8%
- SPF 50+ with water resistance
- No fragrance, no parabens, no chemical filters
- Large bottle - practical for face and body
Trade-offs
- Thick and noticeably casting
- Contains beeswax, so it is not vegan
Who should skip it: Not the pick for daily wear under makeup - it is too heavy. Use a fluid mineral for that.

3. Mineral-only SPF 50 that still spreads
La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral Zinc Oxide Sunscreen SPF 50

Illustrative photo - not the product.
Mineral-only filters at SPF 50, fragrance-free, in a fluid base that actually spreads instead of dragging. The trade is a visible cast on deeper skin tones, which the tinted version solves.
Filters: Titanium dioxide 6%, zinc oxide 5%
What is in it
- Titanium dioxide 6%
- Zinc oxide 5%
- Dimethicone
Best for
Mineral-only SPF 50 that still spreads
Strengths
- 100% mineral - titanium dioxide 6% and zinc oxide 5%, no chemical filters
- SPF 50 with a genuinely light fluid texture
- No added fragrance
- Layers under makeup without pilling
Trade-offs
- Leaves a white cast on medium and deep skin tones
- The fluid finish is matte - dry skin needs moisturizer under it
Who should skip it: If a white cast is a dealbreaker, go straight to a tinted mineral formula - untinted zinc always casts.
Ingredient list read at INCIDecoder - La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral Zinc Oxide Sunscreen SPF 50.
4. The cheapest mineral-only face SPF that is worth using
CeraVe 100% Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30

Illustrative photo - not the product.
Mineral-only filters and ceramides at a drugstore price. It does contain niacinamide, so it is not the pick if that is your trigger - but for most people it is the best value here.
Filters: Titanium dioxide 6%, zinc oxide 5%
What is in it
- Titanium dioxide 6%
- Zinc oxide 5%
- Ceramides
- Niacinamide
Best for
The cheapest mineral-only face SPF that is worth using

- Ceramides in the base
- No added fragrance
- The lowest price of any mineral SPF on this page
Trade-offs
- Contains niacinamide
- SPF 30 and a noticeable cast
Who should skip it: Skip if niacinamide flushes you - the La Roche-Posay mineral fluid is the closest niacinamide-free swap.

What we screened out, and why
These are products you will find recommended elsewhere for this exact search. Each one is excluded here for a specific, checkable reason - not because it is a bad product, but because it does not clear the screen above.
Sunscreens marketed as zinc that list octinoxate or avobenzone
Common, legal, and the reason to read the drug facts panel rather than the front of the tube. A zinc oxide percentage on the front does not mean zinc oxide is the only filter.
Non-nano zinc sunscreens sold on that claim
Non-nano particles are larger, so they cast more and spread worse. That is a cosmetic trade, not a safety upgrade, and the marketing usually implies the reverse.
Zinc sunscreens carrying essential oils
Common in the natural-mineral segment, where a lavender or citrus oil is added to cover the raw smell of a high zinc load. It is fragrance under a botanical name.
Tinted zinc sticks for the face
A stick delivers far less product per pass than a lotion, so the applied layer rarely reaches the tested SPF. Useful for reapplication over the top, not as your only protection.
The full list of what we flag, what each ingredient is and where the evidence is genuinely mixed lives on ingredients to avoid with rosacea.
How to read a sunscreen label properly
- 1Find the drug facts panel, not the marketing. Sunscreens sold in the US are regulated drugs and must list every active ingredient with its percentage.
- 2Count the actives. One filter means one variable. Two mineral filters is normal. A mineral filter plus a chemical one means it is not a mineral sunscreen.
- 3Then read the inactive list for fragrance and for any botanical name followed by oil.
- 4Check for niacinamide if flushing from it is a known problem for you - it turns up in several sunscreens in this category.
- 5Ignore non-nano claims. Larger particles cast more and offer no safety advantage.
Getting it off again
A 19.5% zinc film is the hardest thing in a rosacea routine to remove, and rubbing at it with a foaming cleanser is worse for your face than the sunscreen ever was. A fragrance-free cleansing balm as a first step melts it with no friction - see best cleansing balms for sensitive skin.
How we chose
Filters and percentages read from each product's published drug facts panel, with the fragrance screen applied first and the source linked on every pick. We print no prices because we have no live price feed and will not publish a number we cannot verify. Method at how we choose.
Questions people ask
What is the best zinc oxide sunscreen for sensitive skin?
Vanicream Facial Moisturizer SPF 30. It is the only pick here with zinc oxide as its single filter, at 19.5%, with five ceramides and squalane in the base and no fragrance or niacinamide.
Is there a sunscreen with only zinc oxide?
Yes, but far fewer than the marketing suggests. Most products described as zinc sunscreens pair zinc oxide with titanium dioxide, because that combination is how you reach SPF 50 with mineral filters alone. Read the drug facts panel to be sure.
Is zinc oxide better than titanium dioxide for sensitive skin?
Marginally, and mostly for reasons of coverage rather than tolerance. Zinc oxide reaches slightly further into the UVA range and has a long history of use on irritated skin. Both are inert mineral filters and both are well tolerated.
Does a higher zinc percentage mean better protection?
No. SPF depends on the whole formula. A 19.5% zinc product here is SPF 30; a 5% zinc product paired with titanium dioxide is SPF 50. Judge the SPF and the breadth of coverage, not the headline percentage.
Why does my zinc sunscreen leave a white cast?
Because that is what zinc oxide does on skin, and the higher the load the more it does it. Untinted high-zinc sunscreens all cast. The fix is an iron-oxide tint, not a different zinc product.
