Mineral SPF & Sun Protection
Best sunscreen for rosacea and acne
The one step both conditions need, and the finish is what decides it.

The short answer
La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral Zinc Oxide SPF 50 is the pick for most people with rosacea and acne: mineral-only, fragrance-free, no niacinamide, and a matte fluid finish that does not sit on skin like a mask. If the white cast is the reason you keep abandoning sunscreen, EltaMD UV Clear has the better finish - with two caveats this site will not leave out.

Having rosacea and acne at the same time is common, and it leaves you choosing between two sets of advice that point in opposite directions. The acne advice says oil-free, light, matte, nothing occlusive. The rosacea advice says barrier-first, nothing stripping, mineral filters. Sunscreen is where those two collide hardest, because the mineral formulas that suit reactive skin are the thickest things on the shelf.
All four products below are fragrance-free and clear the same screen. The ranking is driven by finish rather than by filter purity, because a sunscreen you stop wearing protects nothing - and on this skin type, finish is the reason people stop.
The screen
Every product on this page had to clear all of the following before it was considered on its merits. This is the exclusion step, and it runs before any recommendation.
- No added fragrance or parfum anywhere in the ingredient list.
- No essential oils, including ones declared under a botanical name.
- No denatured alcohol, witch hazel, menthol, camphor or peppermint.
- No physical scrub particles.
- Sold in the US right now, from a brand that publishes its full ingredient list.
- Every remaining flagged ingredient is named on the product card rather than quietly left out.
Ingredient lists last checked 2026-09-29. Formulas change - if you spot a discrepancy, the published list on the brand's own site wins and we want to know.

The picks, in order
1. Mineral-only SPF 50 that still spreads
La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral Zinc Oxide Sunscreen SPF 50

Illustrative photo - not the product.
Mineral-only filters at SPF 50, fragrance-free, in a fluid base that actually spreads instead of dragging. The trade is a visible cast on deeper skin tones, which the tinted version solves.
Filters: Titanium dioxide 6%, zinc oxide 5%
What is in it
- Titanium dioxide 6%
- Zinc oxide 5%
- Dimethicone
Best for
Mineral-only SPF 50 that still spreads
Strengths
- 100% mineral - titanium dioxide 6% and zinc oxide 5%, no chemical filters
- SPF 50 with a genuinely light fluid texture
- No added fragrance
- Layers under makeup without pilling
Trade-offs
- Leaves a white cast on medium and deep skin tones
- The fluid finish is matte - dry skin needs moisturizer under it
Who should skip it: If a white cast is a dealbreaker, go straight to a tinted mineral formula - untinted zinc always casts.

2. A weightless finish, if the two caveats do not apply to you
EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46

Illustrative photo - not the product.
The most recommended sunscreen in this category, and two facts get left out of most recommendations: it is not mineral-only - it contains octinoxate - and it contains niacinamide. Both matter here.
Filters: Zinc oxide 9%, octinoxate 7.5%
What is in it
- Zinc oxide 9%
- Octinoxate 7.5%
- Niacinamide
- Sodium hyaluronate
Best for
A weightless finish, if the two caveats do not apply to you
Strengths
- Genuinely weightless; the best cosmetic finish of any pick here
- Almost no white cast
- No added fragrance
- Sodium hyaluronate keeps it from drying skin out
Trade-offs
- Not a mineral sunscreen - octinoxate 7.5% is a chemical filter
- Contains niacinamide, a flushing trigger for a minority with rosacea
Who should skip it: Skip it if you specifically want mineral-only protection, or if niacinamide flushes you. Both are common reasons in this category.
Ingredient list read at INCIDecoder - EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46.
3. The cheapest mineral-only face SPF that is worth using
CeraVe 100% Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30

Illustrative photo - not the product.
Mineral-only filters and ceramides at a drugstore price. It does contain niacinamide, so it is not the pick if that is your trigger - but for most people it is the best value here.
Filters: Titanium dioxide 6%, zinc oxide 5%
What is in it
- Titanium dioxide 6%
- Zinc oxide 5%
- Ceramides
- Niacinamide
Best for
The cheapest mineral-only face SPF that is worth using
Strengths
- 100% mineral filters - titanium dioxide 6%, zinc oxide 5%
- Ceramides in the base
- No added fragrance
- The lowest price of any mineral SPF on this page
Trade-offs
- Contains niacinamide
- SPF 30 and a noticeable cast
Who should skip it: Skip if niacinamide flushes you - the La Roche-Posay mineral fluid is the closest niacinamide-free swap.

4. Zinc-only SPF with a moisturizer built in
Vanicream Facial Moisturizer SPF 30

Illustrative photo - not the product.
Zinc oxide at 19.5% - the highest single-filter load here - with five ceramides and squalane in the base. It is a moisturizer and a sunscreen in one step, which is exactly what a short routine needs.
Filters: Zinc oxide 19.5%
What is in it
- Zinc oxide 19.5%
- Ceramides EOP, NG, NP, AS and AP
- Squalane
- Glycerin
Best for
Zinc-only SPF with a moisturizer built in
Strengths
- Zinc oxide only at 19.5% - no titanium dioxide, no chemical filters
- Five ceramides plus squalane, so it moisturizes properly
- No fragrance, masking fragrance, lanolin, parabens or formaldehyde releasers
- Collapses two steps into one
Trade-offs
- SPF 30, not 50 - you need to reapply more attentively
- A high zinc load means a real white cast
Who should skip it: If you are outdoors for hours or want SPF 50, step up to a dedicated high-SPF mineral formula.

What we screened out, and why
These are products you will find recommended elsewhere for this exact search. Each one is excluded here for a specific, checkable reason - not because it is a bad product, but because it does not clear the screen above.
Anything with fragrance or parfum
The AAD names fragrance on its rosacea avoid-list and advises choosing a fragrance-free sunscreen specifically - its wording is that if the label says unscented, choose another sunscreen.
Sunscreens with denatured alcohol high on the list
Alcohol is on the AAD's rosacea avoid-list. It is also the ingredient that makes many Asian and European chemical sunscreens feel so light, which is why that category is thinly represented here.
Heavy, high-wax mineral sticks and sport formulas
Beeswax, high-percentage waxes and water-resistant film formers are exactly what you want on a hike and exactly what you do not want on skin that is breaking out. Finish is the deciding variable on this page.
Sunscreens with added salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide
Combining an acne active with your SPF sounds efficient and removes your ability to control the dose. Keep the acne treatment and the sun protection as separate steps so you can stop one without stopping the other.
Australian Gold Botanical Tinted Face SPF 50
Mineral filters and a genuinely good tint, widely recommended for rosacea - and it carries eucalyptus globulus leaf extract, which has a perfuming function. It does not clear this screen.
The full list of what we flag, what each ingredient is and where the evidence is genuinely mixed lives on ingredients to avoid with rosacea.
What to look for when you have both
- Non-comedogenic, stated on the label. The AAD's rosacea guidance says to select products that are made for sensitive skin and non-comedogenic. It is not a regulated term, but a brand that prints it has at least tested for it.
- A fluid or light lotion base. Mineral filters have to sit on the surface to work, so the base is the only variable you control. A fluid spreads thin; a cream sits thick.
- Silicone in the base. The AAD's own list of what to look for in a rosacea-friendly sunscreen names silicone - dimethicone, cyclomethicone or cyclopentasiloxane - alongside the mineral filters. It is also what stops a high-zinc formula dragging.
- No fragrance, and no unscented labelling either. The AAD draws that distinction explicitly for sunscreen.
- A tint, if cast is your sticking point. The AAD recommends a micronized or tinted mineral sunscreen to avoid a white cast. The tinted picks are at best tinted sunscreens for rosacea.
What to avoid
Flagged
Niacinamide is the awkward one. It is not an irritant and it is not comedogenic - it is in several of the best-regarded sunscreens for acne-prone skin for good reasons. But it causes flushing in a minority of people with rosacea, and if that is you, two of the four picks above are out. The full set of alternatives is at best sunscreens for rosacea without niacinamide.
Does mineral sunscreen cause breakouts?
Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide themselves are not the problem - zinc oxide has been used on inflamed skin for a very long time. What causes trouble on acne-prone skin is the base a mineral filter needs to be carried in: waxes, heavy esters and film formers, all of which exist to keep the filter in place and evenly spread.
That is why the ranking above is about finish. A mineral-only SPF 50 in a fluid base and a mineral-only SPF 50 in a water-resistant sport base are the same filters doing the same job with completely different consequences for your pores. Read the texture, not just the actives.
Layering it with an acne treatment
- 1Actives at night, sunscreen in the morning. Azelaic acid, which is the active with the best evidence for rosacea papules, goes in the evening - see best azelaic acid products for rosacea.
- 2Moisturizer before sunscreen, not after. Sunscreen needs to be the outermost layer to form an even film.
- 3Give each layer a minute. Rushing sunscreen onto a wet serum is the usual cause of pilling, and pilling is the usual cause of giving up.
- 4Reapply with a tinted stick or powder if you are outdoors, rather than rubbing more cream into inflamed skin.
- 5Do not add an acne wash to compensate. Doubling the surfactant load to offset the sunscreen is how rosacea gets worse, and it is covered at best face wash for rosacea and acne.
How we chose
Every sunscreen considered was checked against its published drug facts panel and inactive-ingredient list, and excluded on a flagged ingredient before it was judged on anything else - which is how one of the most frequently recommended tinted mineral sunscreens in this category ends up on the screened-out list above. What remained was ranked on finish, pore load and whether the formula contains niacinamide. There is no testing lab behind this site and no first-hand-use claim is made anywhere on it; the criteria are at how we choose.
Questions people ask
What is the best sunscreen for rosacea and acne?
La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral Zinc Oxide SPF 50 for most people - mineral-only filters, fragrance-free, no niacinamide, and a matte fluid finish that suits oily and breakout-prone skin. If a white cast is the reason you keep abandoning sunscreen, EltaMD UV Clear has a far better finish, but it contains a chemical filter and niacinamide.
Does mineral sunscreen cause acne?
The filters themselves are not the issue. The base they are carried in can be - waxes, heavy esters and water-resistant film formers are what clog pores, not zinc oxide. Choose a fluid or light lotion rather than a sport or stick formula and the problem largely disappears.
Should I use a sunscreen with salicylic acid in it if I have acne?
Not on rosacea-prone skin. Combining an acne active with sun protection removes your ability to control the dose of either, and if your skin objects you cannot tell which one caused it. Keep them as separate steps.
Is EltaMD UV Clear a mineral sunscreen?
No. Its actives are zinc oxide 9% and octinoxate 7.5%, and octinoxate is a chemical filter, which makes it a hybrid. It also contains niacinamide. Both facts are usually left out of the recommendations, and both change who it suits.
What SPF do I need?
The AAD recommends broad-spectrum protection at SPF 30 or higher with water resistance. SPF 30 applied generously every day beats SPF 50 applied thinly twice a week, which is the real reason finish matters on this page.
Do I still need sunscreen if I am already using azelaic acid?
More than ever. Sun exposure is one of the most frequently reported rosacea triggers, and any active that increases turnover increases the cost of skipping SPF. Azelaic acid at night, sunscreen every morning.
