Is Cetaphil good for rosacea?

Yes - and the current formula is not the one most guides are describing.

By Michael W. · Last updated

The short answer

Yes, for the core products. Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser is ten ingredients, fragrance-free, and can be used without water - genuinely useful on a bad day. One update matters: the current formula contains niacinamide, which most guides still describe as absent.

Cetaphil has been the default recommendation for sensitive skin for decades, and for the Gentle Skin Cleanser that reputation is still deserved. Ten ingredients, no fragrance, no parabens, mild surfactants, and the unusual ability to be used without rinsing.

What has changed is the formula itself, and a lot of advice online has not caught up.

The niacinamide update

The current Gentle Skin Cleanser lists niacinamide fifth. That is a real concentration, not a trace, and it is new relative to formulations many guides are still describing.

For most people this is neutral or mildly positive - niacinamide has good support for redness and barrier function. For the minority of people with rosacea who flush from it, it changes the recommendation entirely. And because contact time in a cleanser is under a minute, this is lower-stakes than the same ingredient in a leave-on cream.

What the Gentle Skin Cleanser is good at

  • Ten ingredients. Among the shortest lists of any mainstream cleanser.
  • Rinse-free use. Wipe on, wipe off with a soft cloth. On days when water itself stings, that is worth more than any active.
  • Panthenol and pantolactone for soothing and moisture retention.
  • No fragrance, no parabens, no essential oils.
  • Available everywhere, cheaply, in large sizes.

What to avoid in the wider range

  • Daily Facial Cleanser. More aggressive surfactants, built for oily skin.
  • Gentle Clear range. Salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. Acne products, not rosacea products.
  • Pro Oil Absorbing Moisturizer. Mattifying agents that work by degreasing.
  • Anything in the range with an exfoliating claim.

The screen

Every product on this page had to clear all of the following before it was considered on its merits. This is the exclusion step, and it runs before any recommendation.

  • No added fragrance or parfum anywhere in the ingredient list.
  • No essential oils, including ones declared under a botanical name.
  • No denatured alcohol, witch hazel, menthol, camphor or peppermint.
  • No physical scrub particles.
  • Sold in the US right now, from a brand that publishes its full ingredient list.
  • Every remaining flagged ingredient is named on the product card rather than quietly left out.

Ingredient lists last checked 2026-09-29. Formulas change - if you spot a discrepancy, the published list on the brand's own site wins and we want to know.

If niacinamide is not an issue for you, Cetaphil's short list and rinse-free option make it a strong choice. If it is, Vanicream's cleanser has a comparably short list without it. The head-to-head with CeraVe is at CeraVe vs Cetaphil.

Questions people ask

Is Cetaphil good for rosacea?

The Gentle Skin Cleanser is - ten ingredients, fragrance-free, paraben-free, with a rinse-free option that is genuinely useful during a flare. The wider range is mixed: the Gentle Clear and Daily Facial lines contain actives that do not suit rosacea-prone skin.

Does Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser contain niacinamide?

Yes - the current formula lists it fifth. That is a change from older formulations, and a lot of advice online has not caught up. It matters if niacinamide is one of your triggers.

Can you use Cetaphil without water?

Yes, and it is one of the few cleansers designed for it. Apply, then wipe off with a soft cloth. On days when water itself makes your face sting, that is a genuinely useful option.

Is Cetaphil or CeraVe better for rosacea?

Cetaphil has the shorter list and the rinse-free option. CeraVe has ceramides and cholesterol and no niacinamide in its hydrating cleanser. Which is better depends on whether you value fewer ingredients or more barrier support.

Has Cetaphil changed its formula?

Yes - the current Gentle Skin Cleanser includes niacinamide and reads differently from older versions. Formulations change without announcement, so the list on the bottle you own is the one that matters.
