Best fragrance-free body lotion for sensitive skin

The step people skip, and the reason the shower keeps undoing the face routine.

By Michael W. · Last updated

The short answer

Vanicream Moisturizing Skin Cream is the pick for most people: eleven ingredients, petrolatum second on the list, no fragrance and no botanicals, in a tub large enough for daily full-body use. CeraVe Moisturizing Cream is the alternative if you want ceramides as well as occlusion.

Cosmetic jars and bottles arranged with textured fabric and dried flowers

People with rosacea get very careful about their face and then pour a scented lotion over everything from the jaw down. It is an understandable split, and it is also the reason some flare-ups have no obvious cause: fragrance applied to the neck and chest is close enough to matter, and a hot shower followed by nothing at all leaves the whole barrier worse off.

The three products below clear exactly the same screen as the face picks on this site - no fragrance, no essential oils, no botanical perfuming agents - and all three are sold in sizes that make daily full-body use affordable. They are ranked on occlusion, because sealing water in is the job and everything else is a bonus.

The screen

Every product on this page had to clear all of the following before it was considered on its merits. This is the exclusion step, and it runs before any recommendation.

  • No added fragrance or parfum anywhere in the ingredient list.
  • No essential oils, including ones declared under a botanical name.
  • No denatured alcohol, witch hazel, menthol, camphor or peppermint.
  • No physical scrub particles.
  • Sold in the US right now, from a brand that publishes its full ingredient list.
  • Every remaining flagged ingredient is named on the product card rather than quietly left out.

Ingredient lists last checked 2026-09-29. Formulas change - if you spot a discrepancy, the published list on the brand's own site wins and we want to know.

The picks, in order

1. A barrier rebuild with nothing else in the way

Vanicream Moisturizing Skin Cream

Cosmetic jars and bottles arranged with textured fabric and dried flowers

Illustrative photo - not the product.

Eleven ingredients, petrolatum second on the list, and no fragrance, essential oils or botanicals anywhere. It is an occlusive that seals water in. It is not elegant and it is not trying to be.

Fragrance-free

What is in it

  • Petrolatum
  • Sorbitol
  • Glyceryl Stearate
  • Simethicone

Best for

A barrier rebuild with nothing else in the way

Strengths

  • Eleven ingredients total
  • Petrolatum-led - the most reliable occlusive there is
  • No fragrance, essential oils or botanical extracts
  • Sold in a large tub; cost per ounce is very low

Trade-offs

  • Heavy and slightly waxy - it sits on skin rather than sinking in
  • No soothing or barrier actives beyond the occlusion itself

Who should skip it: If you wear makeup daily or your skin is oily, this will feel like too much - use it at night only, or pick a lighter cream.

2. Barrier repair on a budget

CeraVe Moisturizing Cream

A hand holding a plain white cream container

Illustrative photo - not the product.

Three ceramides plus cholesterol and petrolatum, no fragrance, in a tub big enough to use on your body too. This is the cream most dermatology offices hand out, and the formula earns it.

Fragrance-free

What is in it

  • Ceramide NP, AP and EOP
  • Petrolatum
  • Sodium Hyaluronate
  • Cholesterol

Best for

Barrier repair on a budget

Strengths

  • Ceramides NP, AP and EOP with cholesterol - a complete lipid set
  • Petrolatum for occlusion plus hyaluronic acid for water
  • No added fragrance
  • Very low cost per ounce in the large tub

Trade-offs

  • Thick - it needs warming between your palms in winter
  • The tub invites fingers into the product; the pump version is more hygienic

Who should skip it: Oily or acne-prone skin may find the richness too much for daytime; use the lotion version instead.

3. A rescue balm for the worst two days of a flare

La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5

Skincare bottles resting on a soft white towel

Illustrative photo - not the product.

A thick fragrance-free balm with panthenol, madecassoside and shea butter. This is a short-term repair layer for raw, stinging patches, not a daily moisturizer for the whole face.

Fragrance-free

What is in it

  • Panthenol
  • Madecassoside
  • Shea butter
  • Glycerin

Best for

A rescue balm for the worst two days of a flare

Strengths

  • Panthenol and madecassoside - both well studied for irritated skin
  • No added fragrance
  • Thick enough to act as an overnight occlusive layer
  • A small tube lasts a long time in spot use

Trade-offs

  • Heavy and slightly tacky - not a daily all-over cream
  • Contains chlorhexidine digluconate, which a small number of people react to

Who should skip it: If you want one cream for everyday use, this is not it - it is a targeted repair layer.

What we screened out, and why

These are products you will find recommended elsewhere for this exact search. Each one is excluded here for a specific, checkable reason - not because it is a bad product, but because it does not clear the screen above.

  • Anything labelled unscented rather than fragrance-free

The AAD is explicit on this: if a product says unscented it can contain chemicals that neutralize or mask the odour of other ingredients, and those can irritate dry sensitive skin. Fragrance-free is the label to look for.

  • First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream

A well-built barrier cream on paper - colloidal oatmeal, ceramide NP, shea butter - that carries eucalyptus globulus leaf oil mid-list. An essential oil with a perfuming function does not clear this screen, however good the rest of the formula is.

  • Body lotions, as a format

The AAD's dry-skin guidance says ointments and creams add more moisture and are more effective than lotions. A thin lotion in a pump bottle is mostly water and a better product to sell than to use.

  • Urea-based body creams

Urea is a genuinely effective humectant for rough body skin, and it is also on the AAD's rosacea avoid-list. If you have rosacea on the face and use a urea cream on your legs, that is fine - just do not carry it upwards.

  • Deodorant soaps and anything sold as a body polish

The AAD names deodorant soaps as too harsh for dry sensitive skin. Scrubs and polishes add mechanical abrasion to skin that is already short of lipids.

The full list of what we flag, what each ingredient is and where the evidence is genuinely mixed lives on ingredients to avoid with rosacea.

What to look for in a body moisturizer

  • A cream or ointment, not a lotion. This is the AAD's position, stated plainly in its dry-skin guidance: creams and ointments add more moisture and are more effective than lotions.
  • Petrolatum, dimethicone, glycerin, hyaluronic acid, mineral oil or shea butter. The AAD lists these among the ingredients worth looking for in a dry-skin product. All three picks above carry at least two.
  • Fragrance-free on the label, not unscented. The two words mean different things, and the difference is covered in full at fragrance-free vs unscented.
  • A tub or a jar rather than a pump. Not a formulation point, a usage one: people apply enough from a tub and not enough from a pump, and body moisturizing fails on quantity more often than on choice.
  • No botanical perfuming agents. Eucalyptus, citrus peel oils and lavender appear in a surprising number of products sold for sensitive skin, declared under botanical names that bypass the fragrance-free claim.

What to avoid

Flagged

Fragrance / parfumEssential oilsUnscented (as a claim)Urea, on the faceDenatured alcoholMenthol or camphorBody scrubs and polishes

One honest wrinkle worth naming: lactic acid appears on the AAD's list of useful dry-skin ingredients and on its rosacea avoid-list. Both are correct. A lactic-acid body cream is a reasonable thing to use on rough arms and legs; it is not a reasonable thing to carry up onto a rosacea-prone neck or chest. The same bottle, two different answers, depending on where it lands.

When to apply it

  1. 1Keep the shower to five to ten minutes, in warm water. The AAD's number, and hot water is a documented rosacea flushing trigger as well.
  2. 2Pat dry, do not rub. Rubbing dry skin is enough on its own to start the itch cycle.
  3. 3Apply while still damp, straight out of the shower. The AAD is specific about this - moisturizer applied to damp skin traps the water that is already there.
  4. 4Use more than feels reasonable. Most people under-apply body moisturizer by a wide margin, which is the single most common reason it appears not to work.
  5. 5Reapply after hand-washing and whenever skin feels dry, rather than once a day on a schedule.

Does the neck and chest count as face?

For rosacea purposes, yes. Rosacea can extend onto the neck and upper chest, the skin there is thinner than on the limbs, and anything applied to it is close enough to the face to be worth the same scrutiny. Use your face cream from the jaw down to the collarbones, and your body cream below that.

That is also the practical argument for CeraVe Moisturizing Cream over a dedicated body product: the same tub works on both, so there is no boundary to police. It is the cream most dermatology offices hand out for exactly this reason.

How we chose

Every product considered was checked against a published ingredient list and excluded on a flagged ingredient before being judged on anything else - which is how a widely loved barrier cream ends up on the screened-out list above rather than in the rankings. What remained was ranked on occlusion, additional lipids, and whether the size and price make daily full-body use realistic. The criteria are published at how we choose.

Questions people ask

What is the best fragrance-free body lotion for sensitive skin?

Vanicream Moisturizing Skin Cream for most people - eleven ingredients, petrolatum second on the list, no fragrance, no essential oils and no botanical extracts, in a tub large enough for daily use. CeraVe Moisturizing Cream is the pick if you want ceramides and cholesterol as well as occlusion.

Is a cream better than a lotion for dry sensitive skin?

Yes, according to the AAD, which states that ointments and creams add more moisture and are more effective than lotions. A lotion is mostly water in a pump bottle; a cream in a tub delivers more lipid per application and encourages you to use enough of it.

Does fragrance in a body lotion matter if I only have rosacea on my face?

It can. Rosacea often extends onto the neck and upper chest, and fragrance applied there is close enough to count. The AAD names fragrance on its rosacea avoid-list and on its dry-skin avoid-list, so there is no case for it either way.

Can I use my face moisturizer on my body?

Yes, if you can afford it - CeraVe Moisturizing Cream and Vanicream are both sold in tubs precisely because they are meant to be used that way. Going the other direction is the one to watch: a urea or lactic-acid body cream is not a face product on rosacea-prone skin.

What does unscented actually mean on a body lotion?

That the product has no detectable smell, which can be achieved by adding masking chemicals. The AAD advises choosing fragrance-free instead, because those masking agents can irritate dry sensitive skin. The distinction is explained at fragrance-free vs unscented.

How often should I apply body moisturizer?

The AAD says several times a day for genuinely dry skin, and specifically while skin is still damp after a shower or after washing your hands. Quantity and timing matter more than which of the creams above you pick.
