Moisturizers & Barrier Repair
Best moisturizers for rosacea and fungal acne
Two conditions with opposite shopping lists, and the narrow overlap between them.
By Michael W. · Last updated
The short answer
Vanicream Moisturizing Skin Cream is the best moisturizer for rosacea with fungal acne: petrolatum-led, eleven ingredients, no plant oils and no free fatty acids, so there is very little in it for Malassezia to feed on. Avene Tolerance Control is the squalane-based alternative with a fifteen-ingredient list, and Aveeno Calm + Restore Oat Gel is the lightest option if a petrolatum cream feels like too much.

Fungal acne is not acne. The usual name for it is Malassezia folliculitis: a yeast that lives on everyone's skin overgrowing in the hair follicles and producing a crop of small, uniform, itchy bumps, most often across the forehead, the hairline, the chest and the upper back. The reason it matters on a rosacea site is that the two problems have almost opposite shopping lists, and plenty of people have both.
Rosacea-prone skin wants barrier lipids and emollients. Malassezia metabolises fatty acids with chain lengths of roughly eleven to twenty-four carbons, which is most of the fats in most emollients. So the calming, oil-rich cream that settles a flare is frequently the thing that feeds the folliculitis. The overlap between what helps both is narrow, and this page is that overlap.
The screen
Every product on this page had to clear all of the following before it was considered on its merits. This is the exclusion step, and it runs before any recommendation.
- No added fragrance or parfum anywhere in the ingredient list.
- No essential oils, including ones declared under a botanical name.
- No denatured alcohol, witch hazel, menthol, camphor or peppermint.
- No physical scrub particles.
- Sold in the US right now, from a brand that publishes its full ingredient list.
- Every remaining flagged ingredient is named on the product card rather than quietly left out.
Ingredient lists last checked 2026-09-29. Formulas change - if you spot a discrepancy, the published list on the brand's own site wins and we want to know.

What Malassezia can and cannot use
| Ingredient | Feedable? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Petrolatum, mineral oil | No | Hydrocarbons, not fatty acids - nothing to metabolise |
| Squalane | No | A hydrocarbon too, despite the oily feel |
| Glycerin, sorbitol, propanediol | No | Humectants; widely tolerated |
| Dimethicone and other silicones | No | Inert as far as the yeast is concerned |
| Plant oils and butters | Yes | Triglycerides of the exact chain lengths it uses |
| Fatty alcohols - cetyl, stearyl, cetearyl | Often reported | Evidence is mixed; many tolerate them |
| Polysorbates and PEG esters | Often reported | Community evidence rather than clinical |
| Esters - isopropyl palmitate, ethylhexyl palmitate | Yes | Among the most consistently reported |
The fatty alcohol row is where honest advice has to admit uncertainty. Cetyl and cetearyl alcohol appear in nearly every cream on the market, including some that people with fungal acne use successfully for years, and the online lists that rule them all out would leave you with almost nothing. We have not excluded them, and every pick here declares what is in it so you can decide for yourself.
The picks, in order
1. A barrier rebuild with nothing else in the way
Vanicream Moisturizing Skin Cream

Illustrative photo - not the product.
Eleven ingredients, petrolatum second on the list, and no fragrance, essential oils or botanicals anywhere. It is an occlusive that seals water in. It is not elegant and it is not trying to be.
What is in it
- Petrolatum
- Sorbitol
- Glyceryl Stearate
- Simethicone
Best for
A barrier rebuild with nothing else in the way
Strengths
- Eleven ingredients total
- Petrolatum-led - the most reliable occlusive there is
- No fragrance, essential oils or botanical extracts
- Sold in a large tub; cost per ounce is very low
Trade-offs
- Heavy and slightly waxy - it sits on skin rather than sinking in
- No soothing or barrier actives beyond the occlusion itself
Who should skip it: If you wear makeup daily or your skin is oily, this will feel like too much - use it at night only, or pick a lighter cream.

2. Skin that reacts to almost everything, including preservatives
Avene Tolerance Control Soothing Skin Recovery Cream

Illustrative photo - not the product.
Fifteen ingredients, no fragrance, and no preservative in the ingredient declaration - it ships in a sterile pump instead. If you have reacted to preserved products, this is the one to try.
What is in it
- Avene thermal spring water
- Squalane
- Aquaphilus dolomiae extract filtrate
- Glycerin
Best for
Skin that reacts to almost everything, including preservatives
Strengths
- No preservative listed - sterile packaging does that job
- Fifteen ingredients, no fragrance, no essential oils
- Squalane and glycerin for comfort without heaviness
- The shortest list of any cream here after Vanicream
Trade-offs
- The most expensive per ounce of any pick on this page
- The sterile pump means you cannot scrape out the last of it
Who should skip it: If cost matters more than ingredient minimalism, the CeraVe or Vanicream creams do the barrier job for a fraction of the price.
Ingredient list read at INCIDecoder - Avene Tolerance Control Soothing Skin Recovery Cream.
3. A lighter gel texture with soothing botanicals
Aveeno Calm + Restore Oat Gel Moisturizer

Illustrative photo - not the product.
Fragrance-free with oat, feverfew and centella - three of the better-tolerated soothing botanicals. It is a gel rather than a cream, so it suits combination skin that finds ceramide creams heavy.
What is in it
- Oat kernel flour and extract
- Feverfew
- Centella asiatica extract
- Panthenol
Best for
A lighter gel texture with soothing botanicals
Strengths
- Fragrance-free and essential-oil-free despite being botanical-led
- Oat flour plus oat extract, feverfew and centella
- Light gel texture that layers well
- Drugstore price
Trade-offs
- Botanical extracts are still botanicals - a small number of people react to feverfew
- Not occlusive enough for very dry skin on its own
Who should skip it: If you have reacted to plant extracts before, the ingredient-minimal creams are the safer starting point.
Ingredient list read at INCIDecoder - Aveeno Calm + Restore Oat Gel Moisturizer.
4. Daily moisturizer that disappears under sunscreen
La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Face Moisturizer

Illustrative photo - not the product.
Light, fast-absorbing, fragrance-free, with ceramide NP and glycerin doing the barrier work. Niacinamide sits fifth on the list, which is the only reason it is not our first pick for everyone.
What is in it
- Niacinamide
- Ceramide NP
- Glycerin
- Prebiotic thermal water
Best for
Daily moisturizer that disappears under sunscreen
Strengths
- Absorbs in seconds - layers cleanly under mineral SPF
- Ceramide NP and glycerin for barrier and water
- No added fragrance
- Works year-round for most skin types
Trade-offs
- Niacinamide is fifth on the ingredient list - a flushing trigger for some
- Not rich enough on its own for very dry skin in winter
Who should skip it: Skip if niacinamide reliably flushes you. Also skip as a standalone if your skin is very dry - layer it over an occlusive.

What we screened out, and why
These are products you will find recommended elsewhere for this exact search. Each one is excluded here for a specific, checkable reason - not because it is a bad product, but because it does not clear the screen above.
Any cream led by a plant oil
Olive, sunflower, coconut, argan, jojoba and rosehip oils are triglycerides of exactly the fatty-acid chain lengths Malassezia uses. On a face with fungal acne they are the first thing to remove, however well they suit dry skin otherwise.
Creams with polysorbates and polyethylene glycol esters
Polysorbate 20, polysorbate 60 and the PEG esters are widely reported to feed Malassezia. The evidence here is community-level rather than clinical, which is why we flag rather than forbid - but on a face that is already breaking out there is no reason to take the chance.
Fermented and galactomyces essences
Popular in calming routines and built on yeast ferment filtrates. The organism is not Malassezia, but the formulas are rich in exactly the substrates it uses.
Fragranced antifungal creams used as moisturizers
An over-the-counter ketoconazole or clotrimazole cream is a drug product with a fragranced base in many cases. If a prescriber has told you to use one, use it as directed - it is not a daily facial moisturizer.
The full list of what we flag, what each ingredient is and where the evidence is genuinely mixed lives on ingredients to avoid with rosacea.
How to choose between these four
- 1You want the fewest feedable ingredients, full stop. Vanicream Moisturizing Skin Cream. Petrolatum-led, eleven ingredients, no plant oils.
- 2You want an elegant texture and a short list. Avene Tolerance Control, built on squalane - a hydrocarbon the yeast cannot use.
- 3A petrolatum cream feels like too much on your forehead. Aveeno Calm + Restore Oat Gel, the lightest option here.
- 4You want something that layers under sunscreen. La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair, with the niacinamide caveat on its card.
If you want to go further than a moisturizer, plain petrolatum ointment is the most restrictive option available and it is covered honestly at is petroleum jelly good for rosacea. And since two picks here contain niacinamide, the flushing question is worth reading first at is niacinamide good for rosacea.
Telling the three things apart
- Fungal acne. Small, uniform, itchy bumps in clusters, usually forehead, hairline, chest and back. Itch is the giveaway - comedones do not itch.
- Papulopustular rosacea. Larger, variable papules and pustules on a background of persistent facial redness, centred on the cheeks, nose and chin. Burning rather than itching.
- Ordinary acne. A mix of blackheads, whiteheads and inflamed spots of different sizes, with visible comedones.
You can have two of these at once, and a Malassezia overgrowth needs an antifungal rather than a different moisturizer - that is a conversation with a clinician, not a shopping decision. What the moisturizer can do is stop making it worse. The rosacea-and-breakouts routine, which assumes ordinary acne rather than folliculitis, is at a routine for rosacea and acne.
One practical point that gets missed: sunscreen matters more to rosacea than almost anything, and a lot of mineral sunscreens are built on esters. If fungal acne is active, a sunscreen with zinc oxide dispersed in silicone rather than in an ester oil is the better choice - the options are at best mineral sunscreens for sensitive skin.
How we chose
Published ingredient lists read on the brand's own site and on INCIDecoder, with the source linked on every pick, and screened for the fatty acids, triglycerides, esters and polysorbates Malassezia is understood to metabolise. Where the evidence for an ingredient class is community-level rather than clinical, this page says so. No prices are printed because we have no live price feed. Method at how we choose.
Questions people ask
What is the best moisturizer for rosacea and fungal acne?
Vanicream Moisturizing Skin Cream. Eleven ingredients, led by petrolatum, with no plant oils, triglycerides or free fatty acids - so it supports a rosacea-damaged barrier without giving Malassezia anything to metabolise.
Can you have rosacea and fungal acne at the same time?
Yes, and it is a common combination that gets misdiagnosed in both directions. The practical difficulty is that the oil-rich creams that calm rosacea feed Malassezia, so the useful products are the ones built on hydrocarbons and humectants rather than plant oils.
Is squalane safe with fungal acne?
Yes. Despite the oily feel, squalane is a hydrocarbon rather than a fatty acid or a triglyceride, so Malassezia cannot use it as a substrate. It is one of the few genuinely elegant emollients available in this situation.
Are fatty alcohols like cetyl alcohol a problem?
The evidence is mixed. They appear in almost every cream made, and plenty of people with Malassezia folliculitis use them without trouble, while some report flares. We have not excluded them, and every pick declares them so you can make your own call.
Will a moisturizer clear fungal acne?
No. Removing the fuel stops you feeding an overgrowth, but clearing one usually needs an antifungal - which is a conversation with a clinician rather than a shelf decision. The moisturizer's job here is to support the barrier without making things worse.
