Moisturizers & Barrier Repair
Which CeraVe is best for rosacea?
The range is large, the useful part of it is small, and the labels do not tell you which is which.

The short answer
CeraVe Moisturizing Cream is the best CeraVe product for rosacea - three ceramides, cholesterol and petrolatum with no fragrance. Pair it with CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser for washing and CeraVe 100% Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30 for mornings. Skip the Renewing SA, Resurfacing Retinol and Acne lines: the actives in them are the ones most likely to set rosacea off.

CeraVe is the brand most often handed over in a dermatology office, and it is also a very large range in which a minority of products suit rosacea-prone skin. The ceramide-and-cholesterol base that made the brand's reputation is excellent for a compromised barrier. The salicylic acid, retinol, benzoyl peroxide and glycolic lines built on top of that base are not, and the packaging does not shout about which is which.
This page is a buying guide to one brand, not a verdict on the brand. If what you want is the yes-or-no answer, that is at is CeraVe good for rosacea. If you want to know which tub to pick up, keep reading.
What to look at on a CeraVe label
- Ceramides NP, AP and EOP plus cholesterol. The reason to buy the brand at all. Present across most of the range.
- No added fragrance. True of nearly everything CeraVe makes, which is the second reason the range works here.
- Niacinamide. Present in a lot of the range, including the mineral sunscreen. Fine for most people, a flushing trigger for a minority.
- Salicylic acid. The letters SA in a product name. Exfoliating, and the first thing to rule out on reactive skin.
- Retinol. Clearly named, and the most reliably irritating thing in the range for rosacea-prone skin.
- Benzoyl peroxide. In the acne line. Effective for acne and harsh on a rosacea barrier.
Two of those - salicylic acid and retinol - are the reason the range needs a guide at all. A tub labelled Renewing SA Cream sits beside the plain Moisturizing Cream in the same packaging, and on reactive skin they are not interchangeable. The full reasoning on actives is at active ingredients to avoid with rosacea.
The CeraVe range, sorted

| Daily Moisturizing Lotion | Usually | Lighter version of the cream; fine, just less occlusive |
| Foaming Facial Cleanser | Rarely | Built for oily skin; more stripping than this skin needs |
| Renewing SA Cleanser and Cream | No | Salicylic acid - exfoliating on a barrier that is already struggling |
| Resurfacing Retinol Serum | No | Retinol is the most reliable irritant in the range |
| Acne Control range | No | Benzoyl peroxide and acids together |
| Skin Renewing range | No | Retinol or glycolic in most of the line |
The picks, in order
1. Barrier repair on a budget
CeraVe Moisturizing Cream

Illustrative photo - not the product.
Three ceramides plus cholesterol and petrolatum, no fragrance, in a tub big enough to use on your body too. This is the cream most dermatology offices hand out, and the formula earns it.
What is in it
- Ceramide NP, AP and EOP
- Petrolatum
- Sodium Hyaluronate
- Cholesterol
Best for
Barrier repair on a budget
Strengths
- Ceramides NP, AP and EOP with cholesterol - a complete lipid set
- Petrolatum for occlusion plus hyaluronic acid for water
- No added fragrance
- Very low cost per ounce in the large tub
Trade-offs
- Thick - it needs warming between your palms in winter
- The tub invites fingers into the product; the pump version is more hygienic
Who should skip it: Oily or acne-prone skin may find the richness too much for daytime; use the lotion version instead.

2. Dry, tight, over-washed skin
CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser

Illustrative photo - not the product.
A non-foaming cream cleanser carrying three ceramides plus cholesterol - the lipid set your barrier actually uses. It leaves skin feeling comfortable rather than squeaky, which is the point.
What is in it
- Ceramide NP, AP and EOP
- Sodium Hyaluronate
- Cholesterol
- Phytosphingosine
Best for
Dry, tight, over-washed skin
Strengths
- Three ceramides (NP, AP, EOP) plus cholesterol and phytosphingosine
- No added fragrance
- Cleans without stripping - skin does not feel tight afterwards
- Available almost everywhere, in large sizes
Trade-offs
- Can leave a slight film on oilier skin
- Not a makeup remover on its own
Who should skip it: If your skin runs oily through the T-zone and you dislike any residue, a low-foam gel will suit you better.

3. The cheapest mineral-only face SPF that is worth using
CeraVe 100% Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30

Illustrative photo - not the product.
Mineral-only filters and ceramides at a drugstore price. It does contain niacinamide, so it is not the pick if that is your trigger - but for most people it is the best value here.
Filters: Titanium dioxide 6%, zinc oxide 5%
What is in it
- Titanium dioxide 6%
- Zinc oxide 5%
- Ceramides
- Niacinamide
Best for
The cheapest mineral-only face SPF that is worth using

4. Combination skin that wants some foam
CeraVe Hydrating Cream-to-Foam Cleanser

Illustrative photo - not the product.
A cream that foams lightly on contact, with three ceramides and gentle surfactants. The trade against the plainer cleansers here is a much longer ingredient list - it also contains a small amount of salicylic acid.
What is in it
- Ceramide NP, AP and EOP
- Coco-betaine
- Sodium cocoyl isethionate
- Amino acids
Best for
Combination skin that wants some foam
Strengths
- Three ceramides with mild surfactants rather than sulfates
- No added fragrance
- The foam is light, so it cleans without the stripped feeling
- Removes sunscreen more readily than a pure cream cleanser
Trade-offs
- A very long ingredient list - more variables than a minimal cleanser
- Contains a small amount of salicylic acid
Who should skip it: If you are trying to isolate a trigger, this is the wrong cleanser to be using - too many ingredients to rule anything out.

A complete CeraVe routine for rosacea
- 1Morning: Hydrating Facial Cleanser or a plain water rinse, then Moisturizing Cream, then 100% Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30.
- 2Evening: Hydrating Facial Cleanser, then Moisturizing Cream. Nothing else.
- 3If you wear mineral sunscreen daily: add a fragrance-free balm as a first cleanse in the evening, from best cleansing balms for sensitive skin.
- 4If niacinamide flushes you: swap the CeraVe sunscreen for a niacinamide-free mineral one. The options are at best sunscreens for rosacea without niacinamide.
Where CeraVe is not the answer
If you have reacted to several products and are trying to eliminate variables, CeraVe is the wrong brand to do it with - the formulas are long and the ceramide complex alone is multiple ingredients. An eleven-ingredient Vanicream cream is the better instrument for that job, and the two are compared directly at Vanicream vs CeraVe.
If niacinamide is your trigger, a surprising amount of the range is off the table, including the mineral sunscreen. And if you want a preservative-free cream, CeraVe does not make one - that is Avene Tolerance Control territory, covered at best hypoallergenic moisturizers.

Questions people ask
Which CeraVe is best for rosacea?
CeraVe Moisturizing Cream. Three ceramides plus cholesterol and petrolatum, no added fragrance, and a tub large enough to use generously - which matters more than most formulation differences.
Which CeraVe products should I avoid with rosacea?
The Renewing SA line (salicylic acid), the Resurfacing Retinol serum, the Acne Control range (benzoyl peroxide and acids) and most of the Skin Renewing line. The plain Foaming Facial Cleanser is usually too stripping as well.
Is CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser good for rosacea?
Yes. It is non-foaming, carries three ceramides plus cholesterol, has no added fragrance and leaves skin feeling comfortable rather than tight. It is the CeraVe cleanser to buy.
Does CeraVe contain niacinamide?
A lot of the range does, including the 100% Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30. Most people tolerate it; a minority with rosacea flush from it. Check the label if that applies to you.
Is CeraVe or Vanicream better for rosacea?
CeraVe if you want ceramides and cholesterol in the formula. Vanicream if your priority is the shortest possible ingredient list because you are trying to work out what you react to.
