Vanicream vs Cetaphil for sensitive skin

Both bland, both fragrance-free, and only one of them still has a short list.

By Michael W. · Last updated

The short answer

Vanicream wins on ingredient minimalism and Cetaphil wins on availability and convenience. Vanicream Gentle Facial Cleanser is the better choice if you are trying to identify a trigger, because there is almost nothing in it; Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser is the better choice for a bad flare day because it can be wiped off without water. On moisturizer, Vanicream Moisturizing Skin Cream is the stronger product - eleven ingredients and petrolatum second - and the Cetaphil equivalent is a longer list for the same job.

Soap and pump bottles arranged on a marble bathroom counter

These two brands get recommended in the same breath and they are not the same proposition. Both are fragrance-free, both are sold on being boring, and both turn up in dermatology offices. The difference is how short the list is and how recently it changed - and on reactive skin those two things decide the outcome.

The short answer is that Vanicream is the more minimal brand and Cetaphil is the more available one. If you can find both, Vanicream is what you want for an elimination routine. If you are standing in a pharmacy at nine in the evening, Cetaphil is what will be on the shelf, and it is a perfectly reasonable product.

The niacinamide row is the one that changed the answer. Cetaphil reformulated the Gentle Skin Cleanser and the current US formula lists niacinamide. For most people that is neutral or mildly helpful. For the minority with rosacea who flush from it, a cleanser they used happily for years is now a different product - which is a good argument for re-reading labels on things you think you know. The background is at is niacinamide good for rosacea.

The moisturizers, side by side

Vanicream Moisturizing Skin Cream is eleven ingredients with petrolatum second on the list. It is not elegant - it sits on the skin rather than vanishing into it - and that is precisely why it works as an occlusive. There is essentially nothing in it to react to, which makes it the instrument of choice when you are trying to work out what your skin is objecting to.

The Cetaphil moisturizing creams do the same job with longer lists and more variables. They are not bad products and plenty of people use them without issue. But if the reason you are comparing these two brands is that your skin keeps reacting to things, the shorter list is the one that teaches you something, and that is Vanicream.

The picks, in order

1. The shortest ingredient list on the shelf

Vanicream Gentle Facial Cleanser

A plain white pump bottle casting a soft shadow on pale marble

Illustrative photo - not the product.

Twelve ingredients, no fragrance, no essential oils, no botanical extracts. When skin is reacting and you cannot work out to what, this is the cleanser that removes the most variables at once.

Fragrance-free

What is in it

  • Glycerin
  • Coco-Glucoside
  • Sodium Cocoyl Glycinate

Best for

The shortest ingredient list on the shelf

Strengths

  • Twelve ingredients total - the shortest list of any cleanser here
  • No fragrance, masking fragrance, essential oils or botanical extracts
  • Non-foaming, gentle surfactants (coco-glucoside, sodium cocoyl glycinate)
  • Widely stocked and inexpensive for the size

Trade-offs

  • Does very little beyond cleaning - no ceramides, no soothing actives
  • The lotion texture feels slippery to people used to a foaming wash

Who should skip it: If you wear heavy sunscreen or makeup and want one-step removal, this will not cut through it - double-cleanse or pick a balm.

2. Rinse-free cleansing on a bad flare day

Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser

Pump bottles on a marble bathroom counter in bright daylight

Illustrative photo - not the product.

Ten ingredients, no fragrance, and it can be wiped off without water - genuinely useful when your face is too sore to touch a washcloth. The current formula does contain niacinamide.

Fragrance-free

What is in it

  • Glycerin
  • Panthenol
  • Niacinamide
  • Pantolactone

Best for

Rinse-free cleansing on a bad flare day

Strengths

  • Ten ingredients, no added fragrance, no parabens
  • Can be used without rinsing on days when water makes things worse
  • Panthenol and pantolactone for soothing and moisture
  • Cheap and stocked by every pharmacy

Trade-offs

  • The current formula contains niacinamide - check if that is a trigger for you
  • Leaves a faint residue if you do not rinse

Who should skip it: If niacinamide flushes you, this is now the wrong cleanser - the reformulated version lists it fifth.

3. A barrier rebuild with nothing else in the way

Vanicream Moisturizing Skin Cream

Cosmetic jars and bottles arranged with textured fabric and dried flowers

Illustrative photo - not the product.

Eleven ingredients, petrolatum second on the list, and no fragrance, essential oils or botanicals anywhere. It is an occlusive that seals water in. It is not elegant and it is not trying to be.

Fragrance-free

What is in it

  • Petrolatum
  • Sorbitol
  • Glyceryl Stearate
  • Simethicone

Best for

A barrier rebuild with nothing else in the way

Strengths

  • Eleven ingredients total
  • Petrolatum-led - the most reliable occlusive there is
  • No fragrance, essential oils or botanical extracts
  • Sold in a large tub; cost per ounce is very low

Trade-offs

  • Heavy and slightly waxy - it sits on skin rather than sinking in
  • No soothing or barrier actives beyond the occlusion itself

Who should skip it: If you wear makeup daily or your skin is oily, this will feel like too much - use it at night only, or pick a lighter cream.

Ingredient list read at INCIDecoder - Vanicream Moisturizing Skin Cream.

4. Barrier repair on a budget

CeraVe Moisturizing Cream

A hand holding a plain white cream container

Illustrative photo - not the product.

Three ceramides plus cholesterol and petrolatum, no fragrance, in a tub big enough to use on your body too. This is the cream most dermatology offices hand out, and the formula earns it.

Fragrance-free

What is in it

  • Ceramide NP, AP and EOP
  • Petrolatum
  • Sodium Hyaluronate
  • Cholesterol

Best for

Barrier repair on a budget

Strengths

  • Ceramides NP, AP and EOP with cholesterol - a complete lipid set
  • Petrolatum for occlusion plus hyaluronic acid for water
  • No added fragrance
  • Very low cost per ounce in the large tub

Trade-offs

  • Thick - it needs warming between your palms in winter
  • The tub invites fingers into the product; the pump version is more hygienic

Who should skip it: Oily or acne-prone skin may find the richness too much for daytime; use the lotion version instead.

Where CeraVe sits between them

Most people comparing Vanicream and Cetaphil are really choosing between three brands, because CeraVe is on the same shelf. The useful way to order them is by what you want the formula to do: Vanicream for the fewest variables, CeraVe for the most barrier lipids, Cetaphil for availability and the rinse-free option.

CeraVe Moisturizing Cream is on this page as the third option for exactly that reason - three ceramides plus cholesterol, still fragrance-free, at a drugstore price. The direct head-to-heads are at Vanicream vs CeraVe and CeraVe vs Cetaphil, and the ceramide case is at best ceramide creams for rosacea.

Which to buy

  1. 1You are trying to identify what you react to. Vanicream, both products. Fewest variables available at a drugstore price.
  2. 2Your face is too sore to touch water. Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser, used rinse-free.
  3. 3Niacinamide flushes you. Vanicream. The current Cetaphil cleanser contains it.
  4. 4You want barrier lipids rather than a minimal list. Neither - CeraVe Moisturizing Cream.
  5. 5You need something tonight, locally. Cetaphil. It is stocked everywhere, and it clears our screen.

Whichever you pick, the moisturizer is the second most important thing in a rosacea routine. The first is sun protection, and nothing on this page substitutes for it - see best mineral sunscreens for rosacea.

How we compared them

Published ingredient lists read on each brand's own site and on INCIDecoder, with the source linked on every product card. Where a formula has been changed - and the Cetaphil cleanser has - we go by the list currently published for the US product. We print no prices because we have no live price feed. Questions people ask

Is Vanicream better than Cetaphil?

For ingredient minimalism, yes. Vanicream's cleanser and cream both have markedly shorter lists, and the cream is petrolatum-led with eleven ingredients. Cetaphil is better on availability and offers a rinse-free cleansing option Vanicream does not.

Does Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser contain niacinamide?

The current US formula does. Most people tolerate it well, but a minority with rosacea flush from niacinamide, and anyone in that group who used the older formula happily should check the label before buying again.

Which is better for rosacea, Vanicream or Cetaphil?

Vanicream, in most cases, because fewer ingredients means fewer candidates for whatever is setting your skin off. The exception is a flare bad enough that water stings, where Cetaphil's rinse-free use is genuinely the better tool.

Is Vanicream or CeraVe better?

They answer different questions. Vanicream removes variables; CeraVe adds barrier lipids. If your skin is reactive and you are hunting a trigger, Vanicream. If your barrier is visibly compromised and you want ceramides and cholesterol, CeraVe.

Are both brands fragrance-free?

The products on this page are, on their published lists. Both brands are large ranges, though, and both sell items outside their core sensitive-skin lines - so check the specific product rather than trusting the brand name.
