Mineral SPF & Sun Protection
Best mineral sunscreens for rosacea
Zinc and titanium only, with honest notes on the white cast.

The short answer
La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral Zinc Oxide SPF 50 is the pick: mineral-only filters at SPF 50 in a fluid that actually spreads. It casts, as every untinted zinc formula does. If cast is your dealbreaker, go tinted rather than hunting for an invisible one.

Sun is one of the triggers people with rosacea report most consistently, and the National Rosacea Society lists it among its trigger factors alongside wind, cold and heat. Daily sunscreen is the closest thing this category has to a non-negotiable.
It is also the step people abandon first, because sunscreen on reactive skin can sting, can cast gray, and can pill under everything. All three are solvable - and which solution you need depends on why the last one failed.
Why mineral is the default here
Not because chemical filters are unsafe. The reasons are narrower and more practical:
- Mineral filters sit on the surface and are not a common contact irritant. Some chemical filters are recognized causes of photoallergic contact reactions.
- Chemical filters convert UV to a small amount of heat. The amount is tiny, but flushing is heat-sensitive and some people genuinely notice it.
- Zinc oxide gives the broadest single-filter coverage available, spanning UVB, UVA II and UVA I fairly evenly.
The screen
Every product on this page had to clear all of the following before it was considered on its merits. This is the exclusion step, and it runs before any recommendation.
- No added fragrance or parfum anywhere in the ingredient list.
- No essential oils, including ones declared under a botanical name.
- No denatured alcohol, witch hazel, menthol, camphor or peppermint.
- No physical scrub particles.
- Sold in the US right now, from a brand that publishes its full ingredient list.
- Every remaining flagged ingredient is named on the product card rather than quietly left out.
Ingredient lists last checked 2026-09-29. Formulas change - if you spot a discrepancy, the published list on the brand's own site wins and we want to know.

The picks, in order
1. Mineral-only SPF 50 that still spreads
La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral Zinc Oxide Sunscreen SPF 50

Illustrative photo - not the product.
Mineral-only filters at SPF 50, fragrance-free, in a fluid base that actually spreads instead of dragging. The trade is a visible cast on deeper skin tones, which the tinted version solves.
Filters: Titanium dioxide 6%, zinc oxide 5%
What is in it
- Titanium dioxide 6%
- Zinc oxide 5%
- Dimethicone
Best for
Mineral-only SPF 50 that still spreads
Strengths
- 100% mineral - titanium dioxide 6% and zinc oxide 5%, no chemical filters
- SPF 50 with a genuinely light fluid texture
- No added fragrance
- Layers under makeup without pilling
Trade-offs
- Leaves a white cast on medium and deep skin tones
- The fluid finish is matte - dry skin needs moisturizer under it
Who should skip it: If a white cast is a dealbreaker, go straight to a tinted mineral formula - untinted zinc always casts.

2. Zinc-only SPF with a moisturizer built in
Vanicream Facial Moisturizer SPF 30

Illustrative photo - not the product.
Zinc oxide at 19.5% - the highest single-filter load here - with five ceramides and squalane in the base. It is a moisturizer and a sunscreen in one step, which is exactly what a short routine needs.
Filters: Zinc oxide 19.5%
What is in it
- Zinc oxide 19.5%
- Ceramides EOP, NG, NP, AS and AP
- Squalane
- Glycerin
Best for
Zinc-only SPF with a moisturizer built in
Strengths
- Zinc oxide only at 19.5% - no titanium dioxide, no chemical filters
- Five ceramides plus squalane, so it moisturizes properly
- No fragrance, masking fragrance, lanolin, parabens or formaldehyde releasers
- Collapses two steps into one
Trade-offs
- SPF 30, not 50 - you need to reapply more attentively
- A high zinc load means a real white cast
Who should skip it: If you are outdoors for hours or want SPF 50, step up to a dedicated high-SPF mineral formula.

3. Tinted mineral SPF with no niacinamide
EltaMD UV Physical Broad-Spectrum SPF 41

Illustrative photo - not the product.
Mineral-only and tinted with iron oxide, so the cast problem largely disappears. It is also the EltaMD that does not contain niacinamide, which matters if that ingredient flushes you.
Filters: Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide (mineral only)
What is in it
- Zinc oxide
- Titanium dioxide
- Iron oxide (tint)
- Quercetin
Best for
Tinted mineral SPF with no niacinamide
Strengths
- Mineral filters only - no chemical UV absorbers
- Iron oxide tint cancels the white cast and adds visible-light coverage
- No niacinamide, unlike the better-known UV Clear
- No added fragrance
Trade-offs
- One tint shade - it will not match every skin tone
- Thick; it needs working in
Who should skip it: If your skin tone is much deeper or much fairer than the single shade, an untinted mineral plus your own tint will look better.
Ingredient list read at INCIDecoder - EltaMD UV Physical Broad-Spectrum SPF 41.
4. High-SPF mineral for long days outside
Blue Lizard Sensitive Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50+

Illustrative photo - not the product.
Mineral-only at SPF 50+, fragrance-free and paraben-free, in a water-resistant base. It is the one to take on a hike rather than the one to wear under makeup.
Filters: Zinc oxide 10%, titanium dioxide 8%
What is in it
- Zinc oxide 10%
- Titanium dioxide 8%
- Tocopheryl acetate
Best for
High-SPF mineral for long days outside
Strengths
- Mineral only - zinc oxide 10% and titanium dioxide 8%
- SPF 50+ with water resistance
- No fragrance, no parabens, no chemical filters
- Large bottle - practical for face and body
Trade-offs
- Thick and noticeably casting
- Contains beeswax, so it is not vegan
Who should skip it: Not the pick for daily wear under makeup - it is too heavy. Use a fluid mineral for that.

5. The cheapest mineral-only face SPF that is worth using
CeraVe 100% Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30

Illustrative photo - not the product.
Mineral-only filters and ceramides at a drugstore price. It does contain niacinamide, so it is not the pick if that is your trigger - but for most people it is the best value here.
Filters: Titanium dioxide 6%, zinc oxide 5%
What is in it
- Titanium dioxide 6%
- Zinc oxide 5%
- Ceramides
- Niacinamide
Best for
The cheapest mineral-only face SPF that is worth using
Strengths
- 100% mineral filters - titanium dioxide 6%, zinc oxide 5%
- Ceramides in the base
- No added fragrance
- The lowest price of any mineral SPF on this page
Trade-offs
- Contains niacinamide
- SPF 30 and a noticeable cast
Who should skip it: Skip if niacinamide flushes you - the La Roche-Posay mineral fluid is the closest niacinamide-free swap.

What we screened out, and why
These are products you will find recommended elsewhere for this exact search. Each one is excluded here for a specific, checkable reason - not because it is a bad product, but because it does not clear the screen above.
EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46
The most-recommended sunscreen in this category, and it is not a mineral sunscreen - its actives are zinc oxide 9% and octinoxate 7.5%, and octinoxate is a chemical filter. It also contains niacinamide. It is a good product that does not belong on a mineral-only page.
Australian Gold Botanical Tinted Face SPF 50
Mineral filters and a genuinely good tint, and it contains eucalyptus globulus leaf extract with a perfuming function. Fails the screen on a botanical rather than on its filters.
Sunscreens with added fragrance
A product you reapply through the day, on skin that is already reacting. Fragrance is the single highest-value exclusion here.
Anything claiming to be an invisible high-zinc sunscreen
Zinc oxide is a white mineral powder that reflects and scatters light. A high load will be visible on skin. A claim otherwise describes someone else's skin tone.
The full list of what we flag, what each ingredient is and where the evidence is genuinely mixed lives on ingredients to avoid with rosacea.
How much to apply
The stated SPF assumes 2mg per square centimeter, which for a face is roughly a third of a teaspoon - about two finger-lengths squeezed onto your index and middle fingers. Nearly everyone applies less than half of that, which means nearly everyone gets substantially less protection than the number on the bottle. If you take one thing from this page, take that.
- 1Two finger-lengths for a face, or a third of a teaspoon if you prefer to measure.
- 2Apply to slightly damp skin and press rather than rub. Less drag, less visible film.
- 3Give it five minutes before makeup. Most casts settle noticeably as the base dries.
- 4Reapply every two hours outdoors, and after swimming or heavy sweating.
- 5Do not skip the ears, hairline and neck. The three places people consistently miss.
How we chose
Published drug facts panels and full ingredient lists first. Anything with a chemical filter was excluded from this page by definition, and anything carrying a flagged ingredient was excluded before its performance was considered - which is how two widely recommended products end up in the screened-out section. Questions people ask
What is the best mineral sunscreen for rosacea?
La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral Zinc Oxide SPF 50 - mineral-only filters at SPF 50 in a fluid base that spreads without dragging. It leaves a cast on medium and deep skin tones, which is true of every untinted zinc formula.
Is EltaMD UV Clear a mineral sunscreen?
No. Its actives are zinc oxide 9% and octinoxate 7.5%, and octinoxate is a chemical filter. It is a good sunscreen with an excellent finish - it is just not mineral-only, and it also contains niacinamide.
How do I stop mineral sunscreen looking gray?
Use a tinted formula. Iron oxides cancel the gray and add protection against visible light. Applying to damp skin, pressing rather than rubbing, and waiting five minutes all help, but a tint is the only reliable fix.
What SPF do I need with rosacea?
SPF 30 as a floor, with broad-spectrum UVA coverage. SPF 50 is worth it for long stretches outdoors. The gap between 30 and 50 matters far less than the gap between applying enough and applying a thin smear.
Is zinc oxide or titanium dioxide better?
Zinc oxide covers a broader range of UVA, so a zinc-led formula is the stronger choice on protection alone. Titanium dioxide casts slightly less and feels lighter. Many formulas use both - see zinc oxide vs titanium dioxide.
Can I use a mineral sunscreen instead of moisturizer?
Sometimes. Vanicream's SPF 30 facial moisturizer is built to do both, with five ceramides in the base. The trade is that you cannot adjust the two independently, and you have to apply enough of it to get the stated SPF - more than most people use of a moisturizer.
